Will it be possible to avoid sandblasting tank and using a paintstripper and some elbow grease to remove the paint? Also what would be the best way to fill in the slots where the fairing mounting is?
Paint stripper works just fine.
Just make sure it's well cleaned before you put paint back on it.
Best way to get rid of that fairing mount would be to carefully cut off that tab and then shape and weld a plate in the recess flush with the tank. Then bodywork it until it's seamless.
Couple of things, empty any fuel and rinse the tank clean. Soak for 24 hours full with water rinse and repeat those steps at least twice.
Nobody wants to weld a tank with fuel fumes in......
Best a job for a pro welder. Lining the tank after is also advised in case you have any pin holes from welding.
Obviously the tank is thin and will distort easy so it will have to be welded in small patches
