our three stores were always open on saturday, 9-3.

saturday is a HUGE LP gas day. also did a great business with the hobbiest and jobbers.

that's how we held our own with the big corporate boys (Air Products, Linde, Air Liquide, etc, etc, etc.....).

Welding supply houses that are run by the big corps don't give a rat's ass about some guy like you and I that need a cylinder of gas once every few months. Even a family owned welding business here in Philadelphia doesn't care about small accounts. I was using J.F. Martin for my supplies. The first day I went there, I spent $1,200. I bought an oxy/acetylene outfit, large tanks for it, an argon cylinder, three boxes of TIG electrodes, and a selection of TIG filler rods. After making a couple of trips there for more supplies, I called them up for a delivery that was going to be about $500 worth of stuff. They refused to add me to their locations that they deliver to. Said I had to pick the stuff up.

Instead, I loaded the cylinders that I leased from them onto my trailer and returned them. I went to Airgas and got cylinders and supplies. The staff there treat me like a valued customer, and they had a MUCH better selection of filler rod, tools, and supplies in a nice, clean store. J.F. Martin was a shithole. I will never do business there again.

Surprising that customer service and attitude was MUCH better with the big corp owned supplier than it was with the locally owned independent supplier. Go figure...

I use Roberts Oxygen here. I agree it is a pain to take time off work to exchange cylinders. It would be great if they had Saturday hours (say 8am-12pm) to satisfy folks like me but I don't see them changing. They're geared more towards larger business accounts. I keep 2 cylinders, a big one and a smaller one, so that if I run out of argon I can at least finish the job.
