A dead vw that you refer to as a coffee table doesn't count as an actual coffee table.

The coins are an old hot rodder trick to cover up ugly holes and parts, and I think he used liberty coins because of the plane the radial came out of.

Considering there are no flying b29s at the moment, someone could have used those parts to get one going again. CAF's plane was grounded due to engine issues.

Yeah I grew up at republic airport.

What the fuck is a b18? They have a b17 and occasionally a b24. You have no idea how few of these airplanes are left. B29s are all but extinct being the subject of early military scrappage programs that didn't release the airplanes to the General public. I am sure there are at least a couple sitting in classified boneyards in the west but the govt isn't giving up the ghost. Remember it is the first nuclear capable bomber.

Back in the 1980s a friend of my father who had been a tech during the war used to make a pretty good living working on these planes. He used to tell me stories (and show me pics) of ww2 fighters still being used in south American airforces as late as 1986.

    Yeah I started drinking early....B17.

I am aware of how rare the old birds are.
My old teacher (Gregg Karp) used to tell up all of the same stories about countries using WW2 fighters years after the US.
He also told us something about the P38s that were used to survey parts of central and south america. Some how his father wound up owning one or two of them and sold them on. I remember hearing about some of the crazy cheap prices that some of these aircraft traded hands for. Just think if someone had thought to stash a few away. The hell with the barn find sandcast CB750....45K now and what 2K new? A P38 would be almost priceless right now.

My dentist, a real car guy, has an old radial plane motor he is restoring and making into a coffee table. When I asked him "why?" His answer was "why not!" He has a point. That sucker is heavy, not sure how he is going to get it into his house but I wouldn't put it past him to haul it in thru the double doors with his front end loader.

There is all kids of stuff you can do with old parts. I've got wall sconces in the living room that are upside down mounted '64 impala side view mirrors that I picked up for $10. Flat head valve covers painted in different ways also make really cheap gearhead art to hang on the wall. But for $30k that guy need to come to my house and build the damn thing while he cooks me dinner, with a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue and four hookers for desert!

On the airplane thing, my oldest kid (8) got to take his first flight ever in a two seater circuit racer last Saturday!
    220, 221 whatever it takes.
