    Best honda thumper engine?

So I have a rolling chassis...well really a whole bike minus engine that needs a lump. It's a 500T (cb450's boring older cousin) with 37mm Showas from an EX250 plus a swingarm from the same (box section) converted to twin shocks. Spoked rims with CBR600 front discs and calipers, a repaired and relined glass tank and wacky seat that needs finishing.
What I don't have and can't seem to locate is a servicable CB450 or 500T engine. So I got to thinking about something like an XR500, FT500, XR650....XL whatever....thumper.
I don't have a lot of experience with Honda's one lungers and I know there are better variations withing the breed.
    Anyone have any thoughts?

    CB500T is the younger cousin
The RFVC motors are pretty good and produce more power than the original but I would like to find the earlier 500 single as it pretty much drops right into a CB360 chassis

XR650l is a good engine as it has a great support (been in productions since early 90s till now with no real changes).

With cams and higher comp and better carb they can become very different machines. Many XRLs have been used in world touring with really high mileage.

    Isn't the 650 watercooled?
I thought it was the XR600 that was in production since 90's?

there is xr650R which is alu frame water cooled. Not street legit. And XR650L which is basically XR600 without kick, tamer cams maybe and lean jetted cv carb to make it street legit. A lot of XR600 parts from plastics to motor parts fit XR650L.

The Dominator had a 650 AC that survived till lateley in the SLR and FMX (dunno if you got that in the states), but had there only 39 horses. Bit of a Labrador.

yes but they can be tickled to get much more out. There are the infamous "dave's carb mods" that fix the jetting issues (includes enlarging a hole in the vacuum piston). But there is also hot cams, high com pistons, edelbrock pumper carb etc. available to these. People get pretty peppy things out of them

XL 500S and FT500 Ascot are essentially the same engine, except for starting and electrical. I would go with an FT since it is electric start and 12V. That should make a decent package. The XL exhaust will bolt on if you want to go for an up pipe.

Early, horizontally split engines are less reliable than
later ones with radial valves and vertically split crank-
cases. I'd take some XR600 engine. All have great tuning
    potential.

    Best regards
