    Thought experiment.

Okay really its just a dumb hypothetical question. So I just picked up a 1986 KLR250. Paid next to nothing for it and it is just to get my wife the feel for off road before I buy her a better dual sport for her with electric start.

However I have been reading about the Kawasaki Mojave 250 4 wheeler and the KLr and mojave have the same motor. The difference is the bottom ends are different (along with some other things by year) the klr having a 6 speed transmission and the mojave having a 5 speed with a reverse gear. You can mix top ends but can't mix internals from the bootom end. The engine from the outside looks the "exact" same. So my question is what would happen if you stuck the mojave motor in the KLR? Would the reverse work at all? Useful, probably not. Just want to hear some thoughts.

Pretty sure the ATV bottom end is much larger.
ATV's usually have balancers and stuff.
Reverse would work as it's inside transmission, but, WHY?
Putting 6 speed motor into quad I can see, putting quad into bike ? ? ?

The KLR has 2 balancers if I remember correctly, the mojave has 1 balancer inside and one outside because the reverse gear is where the second balancer would go. Lots of people have been putting the KLR motor in the mojave and they look exactly the same from the pictures I've seen.

Again, it's just hypothetical but if I really wanted to the gearing wouldnt be terrible because its a dual sport which would spend its life off road.

I think bystanders would be most impressed seeing a motorcycle ridding backwards, uphill. I would.

I rode my old yz490 backwards....but it was down a really steep hill.
Then it was chasing me down the hill.
That bike tried to kill me on multiple occasions.....I miss it!

I feel the same about the 490 Maico I had, tried to kill me on several occasions but it was so much 'FUN'

Had an RD400 once, with a Martek electronic ignition, that I nearly stalled when I checked up from going into traffic from a side street. When I went to launch a few seconds later, it was running backwards. Not nearly the nifty trick I thought it would be.

At least when you put your KLR in REVERSE you'd be prepared for the direction the bike would move, but...why?
