For you younger guys: if you were growing up in So. Cal. in the late 70s through the mid-80s, Black Flag was the center of the known universe.

I saw Black Flag at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver around '81 (?) It was a tiny strip mall type venue. The opening act was called the "trees" ...a less than punk, long hair speed metal band. When they finished the set, they pulled off thier hats and long wigs. (It was Ginn and the guys in costume, providing thier own opening act! )

Then the Black Flag set began...

Did anyone else see them in concert ? Was this something they did back then everywhere?

This sounded familar so I pulled out Rollin's "get in the Van". There used to be a "band" (and I use the term loosely) called Nig-Heist that was made up of some of the members of the flag plus their roadies. They used to open for Black flag a lot and Ian MacKaye, Chuck Biscuts, and Glen Danzig all played in the band for at least one set. they used to wear crazy hippy wigs. In 1984 at the rainbow room two of the members played naked and got arrested. there is a small writeup of it here:

if you haven't read get in the van, get it and then buy the audio book read by rollins at itunes. It is a picture book so it is nice to be able to look at the pictures and hear rollins narrate instead of look at the pic, read, flip back to the pic, read some more, flip back, etc....

I saw Black Flag at City Gardens in Trenton NJ in that time frame. Totally forgettable show, some band from Philly opened, never seen so much BS posturing.
