    Strangest thing I've ever seen.

    So, I am in the process of building my 1982 CB750 cafe, when a local craigslist ad is selling a 1979 CB750 dirt cheap - doesn't run. Quick diagnoses leads me to believe this guy doesn't know what he's doing, and it's a fairly straightforward gummed up carb. I buy the bike, swap the carb with one I have on the shelf and it fires right up. Time to flip the bike and make a few bucks - then I see something really strange. Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's something. I have no idea. First off after pressure washing I notice the jugs have 901cm stamped on them, not 748cm so my interest is peaked because it's an RC01 VIN, meaning it started as a 750. Scouring the bike for other oddities I find this, mechanically stamped into the frame, under all the paint just below the triple tree. EXPIRES 03 OCT 80. What, the hell, is this bike?

    Should I hold off selling this bike, or is this just some 750 that someone dropped a 900 into, and the stamping on the frame is completely insignificant. It also came with a fairing, which made me think this may be some modified-from-factory police cruiser or something.

    So I have a feeling that underneath that paint you are going to find an old state inspection sticker, but the only way to know is to lightly sand it off. Some of the older ones were mechanically stamped like that, and at some point someone probably painted over it rather than remove it. That being said, if the bike is a 1979 and it is an old inspection sticker, there is a good chance you just learned when the bike was sold new and titled - october 1979 (since inspections are typically good for a year).

    If someone did swap a 900 mill into the 750, they probably did other stuff. How about...you know....multiple pics of the bike so we can see what you are working with?

    I guess so. Not sure if that makes it worth more, or less. In the meantime I still need to get a headlight and turn signals on it.

    Where are you located that the bike has a km speedometer?

    based on the fairing and other bits, it looks like someone put a 900 motor in it to go touring. interesting that they didn't upgrade the brakes at all. They may have also had 750 carbs on the 900 because it's an old trick to increase both throttle response and torque while giving up top end hp (which isn't needed for highway cruising). They did put the 900F shocks on the rear though, so that's something.

    If that fairing has one of the tool-less vetter headlights, those are awesome. I run one on my brother's 1979 F.

    Yeah it does have the toolless Vetter headlight, and I have a spare one to boot that is going on another bike. The carbs on this 900 are identical to my 750's carbs, probably have different jetting though I would imagine.
