    Motorcycle Checklist

I am going to go look at a bike on Sunday. Its a 77 Yamaha XS650 and was wondering what you guys would suggest checking for when I get there? I know running, and how it rides, how it shifts, but what are some other things?

According to a friend that has several of these, the charging system is a very weak link. Be sure to check that the battery is charging properly.

Those are a great bike. I put a lot of miles on one back i the early 80's.

That same friend has a very nice example for sale for around $1300 or so. The bike is in upstate NY, Walton to be exact.

Things to look at/for in general...from a few yards away, front and rear view, make sure everything lines up on the centerline of the bike, wheels, fenders, forks, handlebars, exhaust pipes, etc. Also sitting on the bike looking at the handlebars and front fender and wheel, and riding in a straight line, it should look and feel like it's tracking straight. Look at tire wear to confirm that.
It's also a good idea to ask how long the current owner has had the bike, what work he's done, how many miles he's put on it etc.

913, I will try to get a hold of him today to answer your questions, if not it will be Tuesday. I do know that it is one of those "Crusier" types with the buckhorn bars and stepped up seat, popular in the late 70's. If I had to pick a year I would say '79 or '78 but I am just guessing. Bone stock. The charging system is good.
