need some speedo/ tach help guys!

So I'm looking into replacing the stock speedo/tach on the 71cb350 that I am building.

I have run across these items (link below)...I really like them because of their simplicity and size, plus I can eliminate the ugly stock gauge mount (you know the one with the N light and signal lights).

My question is...will these work on my bike? I have no clue when it comes to ratios and other things still learning as I go. The site is for yamahas and the rep that got back to me didn't know if it would work.

Thanks in advance...heres the link, im asking about the 1st 2 items...the speedo and tach

Good question. Have you gone to a dealer and checked out the parts unlimited catalog? I'm sure there are tons of aftermarket gauges in it. Honda to Honda tends to work quite a bit in my experience, but many times parts are made by the same company, like Shindengen or Nippon Denso, and if this is the case there is a higher probability they are compatible, at least as far as the cable is concerned. I know this isn't a ton of help but it's all I got. Anyone else?

    Impatient much? Double posting too.

You can get these for a Honda 750, so you can probably get them for your bike. I wouldn't buy them from the Yamaha place, though.

I'm pretty sure the Yamaha uses different gearing to Honda.

some of those tachs look electronic to me. What you need to find out with an electronic tach is if the xs 650 is the same layout ignition wise as a cb350. Specifically you need to know if the xs fires both cylinders off one coil or two and if it is a wasted spark setup or not. If they match up you can use them. I would not use the cable tachs because there is no gaurantee that the ratio is the same.

as a caveat though mini-tachs tend not to be all that accurate. I wouldn't relay on it for racing.

As for the speedo drive, there are pretty universial so you could use the cable drive if you want. I believe there are only two speedo drive ratios in common use anyway and one of them is used only by hd.

thank you for the help guys!

I'm sorry for the double post, I thought it should go in technical too.

Yes my main concern was with the speedo....i just want to make sure that when the speedo says 40, i actually going 40ish.

As far as the Tach.....as long as it is somewhat accurate that is cool with me as I will not be racing my bike, just cruising.

    Thank you again everyone!

If you don't know the tach drive ratio the tachs won't even be close to accurate. For example cb750s use a 4:1 tach drive ratio, the twins and smaller fours use some goofy other ratio - something:3, if you put a cb550 tach on a 750 it reads incorrectly which makes tuning the bike harder. Go with an electronic tach, they are much much much better.
