    1981 Suzuki GS850 Cafe update

    Hello Panel,
Ive posted before about my first attempt at "re-characterizing" a 1981 gs850. https://www.caferacer.net/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9385

Heres some things i did while i had some time off from school.
The stock side panels were cracked and wouldnt stay on. So i tried to make fiberglass replacements- the NEWBIE way.

i covered the old panel with saran wrap (i know you pro's are probably condemning me to hell for not making a mould/plug/99steps the right way...but it worked!kinda!) and then laid out the sheet and resin.

those ripples you see in the glass is on the underside where it moulded over the saran...the actual outer surface is very smooth!

2 layers of cloth and multiple coats of resin later....

the side panels are unsanded and raw right now. one of them came out much better than the other! its a learning process.
Can anyone now tell me a good way to mount them? the old ones were ziptied on...and that cannot fly anymore.

this picture shows the newly added chrome front fender that i put on the replace the sawed short old one (i know its heavier, but i like chrome).....while the pic is up...can anyone suggest a rearset system that will work with this interesting setup??? has anyone worked it out for this bike?

Here is a picture of the tank with all the matte black slowly being sanded off. the prev owner bondo'd parts of the tank for god knows what...but its slowly showing.

well for now im back at school...and thats how she sits till spring break.

Did you spray bomb the engine in chrome spray paint? Personally, I'd just leave the side covers off. What about holding then on with velcro. YOu'd be surprise how good it holds.

Parts of the engine are still orig aluminum and other parts are painted aluminum (not chrome--since chrome paint droops and runs/ atleast the simple stuff ive seen). steel wool and engine cleaner always surprises me!
    velcro You say ??!!
now thats an idea! i just hope it wont crack the glass when i take em off!

I looked at your bio, what school do you go to?

We should do some riding this season, but all my bikes are little poppers, except for the Sportster.

PeteN at Oneonta Motor Sports is on here sometimes and may be able to help you now and then.

Nice bikes! I am thinking of picking up a 80's GS850 a guy up on East St. has, unless you got there first.

    Hey jack,
I go to med school at Stony Brook Univ, on long island.
But during the summers and breaks i come home to oneonta.
I get all my inspections done at oneonta motorsports...Pete and his brother are great fellaz!
I consulted with them about a carb bug in a katana that i once owned...they suspected a water droplet in the carb bowl and told me to drain em thru the botton screw...bingo!
and ...Nope i got my 850 from a student up in albany, so if u get a GS850 we'll go ride thru the catskills.

The key is to use industrial velcro but not much at all. Maybe like two or three small one square inch squares. I used three eight inch length strips on my seat and I had to take a strip off as it was damn near impossible to get off.
