    oh my.

well here goes nothing: i gotta say i am not anti-gun, but i am for some level of gun control (dont know exactly what, but im willing to talk about it). i do resent in general labels like conservative and liberal, but maybe that just because of my post-modernist generation (go ahead and write it off). i dont mind disagreeing with folks, eurago, but i would sure appreciate it if you could try not beginning threads with the assumption that everyone on this board is of like mind.

i have never considered myself a conservative or a liberal, i consider myself a moderate. i am conceded to the fact that political institutions are unable to completely solve man's ills, as they are run by humans (who, according the ethos of many of our founding fathers, are basically evil--thus the checks and balances). i am also under the belief that balance is in order; that is to say we need people who disagree with each other to take turns running various offices of government so that we can maintain a balance in policy.

i voted for mr. obama. no shame about it, either. although i have already been disappointed with some of his actions, i think the president's got a lot of the right ideas. in terms of foreign policy (making friends instead of enemies) and economic policy (lots of inventive new programs to help out anyone and everyone who may be having a rough time in the US) i am generally supportive. im also pretty sure the US is pulling out of the economic slump. my investments have earned 30% since march. not a bad recovery--now they had lost some 45% of original value since jan 2008, and so still have a way to go, but its a start.

this is turning into a rant. thats probably because this isnt the first time someone has begun a conversation with "liberal so-and-so did...to this true-hearted american, and obama is a muslim socialist terrorist." i can only tolerate so much belligerence. in the words of pop-eye, "thats alls i can stands, and i cant stands no more." you probably have some valid points and i dont mean to belittle them, but how about a little diplomacy and tact, eh?

    also, one more thing:

quote:"I believe [jesus] would carry a sword if he needed it"
    Luke 22:36
    New American Standard Bible (©1995)
And He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one".
a close (or not-so-close) anaylsis of the text reveals that jesus does not take weapons upon himself. that said, he is also god-incarnate (i.e. not merely human--different rules apply to him and us/all humans), and does seem to say that there is a time and place for many things, even violence in this case. additionally, scholars point out that the presence of swords was necessary in the garden as jesus is arrested to fulfill prophecy about the christ being numbered among transgressors (a few verses later when peter attacks one of the servants). jesus, however, rebukes peter's violence and heals the man. one of the other gospel authors records jesus saying that, "those who live by the sword will die by the sword," as both a warning and a matter of practicality. in this he seems again to rebuke the use of violence. that, at least, is my interpretation.

well, now we all know a little more about me, and i feel a bit naked putting it out there, but there it all is anyway.

Ha! I can do better than that....

Yep. I think it is an astute theological question worthy of further discussion.

Commodify your faith and your discontent in one convenient purchase: Chevy and Kalashnikov.

sounds like vouchers for meth lab startup kits would do even better.

    cheers, bcr

Spaceman...didnt intend to bash the liberals, or anyone else. I'm pretty moderate myself, with a lean towards the right. Lately, I've been more cynical than anything else...a little frustrated and kind of fed up. There's a certain amount of common sense that needs to be appllied to, well, basically everything, including gun control....and car salesman! The dealer sure isnt erasing any stereotypes with his comments, but what he is doing is living his american dream, and with this effective ad campaign, probably selling lots of cars!

As Retro says "only in America!"
