Until you're bored with what you're riding and want to upgrade your bike

Before anything else means before even considering how to improve or build something.

I'm a complete "newb" when it comes to anything more than maintenance, playing with carbs, suspension (and I mean playing) and putting nice and/or useful stuff on my bikes. I've signed up and posted a bit but have read shit loads of threads, followed links and ordered books so I can learn how and what to and what not to do and I've still barley touched my project.

Knowledge is power and if these folks on here who have years of experience, have built, ruined and made mistakes tell you something I'd say it was best to listen.

Thank you o1marc. That is actually some useful advice. So... I have to wait until next year to ride. How long does it take to get aquinted with the road before building a bike?

You'll know after riding awhile. You may find the bike you own needs so much constant upkeep that you couldn't possibly afford to build a bike from scratch. You may or may not learn that the more you send up front the better off you'll be. Too many have fallen into the trap of "there is nothing more expensive than a free motorcycle", thinking they were going to tear up the world on that bike that they got for free that had been sitting since the 70's. You may learn after riding "your" bike that it is definitely not the one you want to modify into a pseudo racer. It all comes with experience.

    OP,

You need the evolution mind set, not revolution.

Right now you have zero base line. Until you have a base line you will have no quantifiable way to measure your changes.

    2. What makes a cafe racer so unique compared to other bikes?
    Bitches

    3. What is the first step to building a cafe racer?
Learn how to ride. Once you know you can point out weak links to improve.

    4. What is the most important step?
    Staying off pipeburn

    5. What model bike(s) have you transformed?
    Fuck this "transformed" bullshit.

    6. Do you have a favorite build?
    Nope

    7. What was the most difficult part about that build?
    Avoiding hipsters.

Really it is coming up with ways to measure performance

    8. How much did it cost?
    Speed costs money.
Cost is relative. The smarter you are the less it costs.

    9. How long did it take to complete the build?
Fuck the idea of a build.

    Ride, improve, repeat

    10. How and when did you get involved in the cafe racer scene?
    Me?
I fell in love with a Rob North Trident.
    Bought CB750, fucked it up.
    Moved on.

Thanks again guys. Just put the question number in front of your answer.
