    1982 GS450L

I just picked this bike up from a guys who loved it and took great care of it, then one day he rode it into his garage where it sat for 9 years. The bike is in great shape, aside from rust in the tank and a little on the exhausts. Oil is clear, charging battery now.

I will post some photos as I get into the bike.

Does anyone know where to find cafe parts that can be swapped out on this bike?

ps. I paid $300 for it

Welcome and be prepared for some noob harassment.

The "L" models aren't an easy starting point so you've got your work cut out for you. Most everything you do will have to be custom fabrication.

The early 80's cruisers are kinda cool. Why not restore it and enjoy it for what it is? Stock parts are readily available.

Anyway, isn't having a bike in Hawaii kind of like being a mountaineer who can only climb on an indoor rock wall?

Agreed about the noob harassment, but I do have fab skills.
My buddy and have have already modified a KZ750 LTD.
It's not quite done but getting close.
I'll post some photos when Flickr stops fucking with me...

That being said I am no motorcycle mechanic, but mechanically inclined.

I am guessing you have never been to Hawai'i, or you would understand how this is a perfect place to be on a cycle. It's real easy to get around town with some great mountain and coastal riding, beats traffic too.
80's cruisers are for old men...

I am just hoping someone on here could point me in the right direction, before I start fabricating mounts and reconditioning cheap parts.

    Thanks for your time!

Before I start the bike I have been checking everything out. The battery is obviously dead, the oil looks like it was changed before it was put into storage. Pistols are cranking in the chambers and it has compression. The spark plugs should probably be replaced, right? The tank and carbs appear to have been drained before it was placed in storage, so I cleaned the tank of rust. The only issue I have is with clutch, it doesn't seem to be engaging. I tried tightening the cable, didn't help. So, I opened the casing and checked the mechanism that moves the clutch push rod everything seems to be working well.

    What could this possibly be?
    My apologize for my inexperience...

I assume you mean the clutch wont DISengage , right? Plates will surely be stuck together after 9 years. Just pull the clutch plates out and seperate them. It's a common problem on a bike that's been sitting a long time.

Thanks for your reply, I figured that was the problem.
Does this include removing the transmission?

No - the clutch is under the RHS engine cover. Put the bike on the side stand and remove the cover (this way you shouldn't spill too much oil out of the motor).

Or just wait until you have the bike running and free the clutch up then (once the oil warms up it will free up).

Thanks for your help, just grabbed a battery and will start it up tomorrow.

I am looking around for a new air intake for the bike, the air box has got to go. I see alot of people use K&N intakes but I have read some people advise against it for performance reason. I really like the way the bell-style intake systems but I am not sure what to be looking for...
