    Angry 1979 Suzuki gs850 cranks but won't start

    Hello I have a 1979 Suzuki gs850 that I recently purchased. My plan is to get it running so that I can sell it. I have never taken on a task like this before but I figured I would start by removing and cleaning the carburetors which I did. I cleaned the engine as it was full of dirt and put the carburetors back on (no I didn't get anything in the engine). I checked to see if the battery had juice and it read 12.8 volts on my multi meter. I connected the terminals and turned the key to the start location. Nothing happened. I looked up a wiring diagram and it turns out the previous owner connected the start button to the turn signal switch. I connected the wire where it should go and the bike started to crank but didn't start. My Concern is that the kickstarter is really easy To move and can be moved with your hand. Does it mean it has low compression or is it normal on this bike? I also found out that there's 2 regulator rectifiers which I don't think there's supposed te be more than 1. There is plenty of gas in the tank and starter fluid isn't helping. I checked the spark by putting a screwdriver in the spark plug boot and putting it against the engine block.     Jeez hope you didn't pay money for that thing.

    Anyway, is there fuel getting in the carb bowls? How old is the fuel? You can put your hand or a rag over the back of the carbs to entice fuel into the cylinders.

    Probably a good time to buy a compression gauge too.

    Did you clean the gas tank and petcock before putting gas in it.

    Did you honestly think you could just get that thing running and sell it to somebody?

    how long did it sit ? how many miles ? did you look at the cylinder bores?
    a bike that has been sitting for years needs a lot of inspection/checking over before you even turn the engine over one time
    its easy stuff just takes some effort and time and these checks/inspections are common to any icu
    but if you dint know that already you are in way over your head
    cut your losses resell the bike, because you should have been sharp enough to been studying the factory service manual you have zero knowledge and experience with engines ..if you want a motorcycle buy a good running one
    if you want to work on them go back to school

    I'm guessing the PO fucked up the wiring when he started his "build" with dumbass clip-ons.....then walked away.....

    That's how my xs750 looked like when I first got it. It took 2 more whole parts bikes and a shit load of $$$ and two and a half years to finish. And it still looks like shit but at least it runs nice.


    I think the only people that should buy bikes like that to rebuild are the ones that can tear down and rebuild the given bike in their sleep. And those people are rarely stupid enough to put themselves through the trouble.

    Good luck.. it always seems like a good idea.. old bike, cool tank patina, etc tec.. bit of fuel , clean it up and sell it. If it was a highly collectible or rare bike then maybe!

    I've bought and sold loads of bikes, many I've got home and thought shit.. what a mess.. and simply got rid, not even bothered to try and start because it needs the type of buyer that is going to do a full restoration. Your bike has so many problems looking at it, and even if you got it running to make it worthy to some hipster it would need to be road worthy to ride away if you plan to make any money and attractable... and that stage would require more money than its worth at its sales point... unless your know your stuff and as JCW says can do in your sleep.

    So my advice.. keep it, restore it. hide the receipts and enjoy.. I have two bikes in my collection that owe me way more than they are worth lol!

    or sell it now.. and replace your hours on the bike with a second job.. if your intention is to make money you will earn more by doing this!
