1978 Honda CB550 - first cafe project starts here

Just got a bike last Friday. Went to Dallas, TX to pick up a 1978 CB550K. Seems all original with 17K mi. Has straight pipes and a big ass seat. I am interested in the look of the bikes at BCR.

    First up battery relocation ---

    40 lbs. of crap removed

This the look I am going for...

What do I have to buy first?

    1. A repair manual

    2. Check the points, battery, plugs, oil, brake fluid/pads/shoes and cables. Buy this shit next if you have to.

    3. Throw that abomination king-queen seat into the river...

    4. If you're going to relocate the battery i guess it would help you to know the size of battery called for in the "relocation kit." Airtech provides dimensions for all of their seat pans, so you can get a rough idea of what sizes will meet your requirements. Then, buy your seat from Glass From the Past.

    Nice find, though.

Clubman bars, checker decals, flat black paint.

Clubmans followed by the checker decals. Flat black paint is so 2008. All the cool kids are using satin black paint.

Still waiting on new bars, grips, and throttle cables for the bike. I installed new "cheap" pods, but one of them prevents the choke slide from working.
There is already an electrical problem it will not start. See picture below. More parts to order. I just want to keep it running for the summer and tear it down this winter.

Wire broke off and now it will not turn over.

Oil leaks will be an issue for a later date

    Catboy,
I just don't have the energy to deal with it anymore. Maybe next winter when I get bored. In the meantime I wouldn't even know where to start with this one, since he already has the clubmans and cheap pods going for him.

I promise I am not going to do this bike any harm. I just want 3 months to put all the cheap noob shit on it I can before I have to start working on it. I got rid of a perfectly good Yamaha to Barack Obama with the CB stuff.
