    question(s) about h4 bulb

I have an aftermarket headlight unit on my cl350, equipped with a modern h4 bulb. The headlight will only operate on high beam - I switch it to low and there's nothing. I just went out and pulled the lens off to have a look, and it doesn't look as though any part of the bulb is discolored/burnt out or otherwise faulty. I hope it's not a wiring issue as I'd rather bash my head into a brick wall than mess with any more wires.

Is it possible that the bulb could fail on low but function on high?

Yes. Easiest way to check the bulb it to pull it out and test each lead with a battery or test for continuity with a multimeter.

yeah, usually one filament burns out before the other, just get a new bulb, the running filament is burned

You have a common ground (green) white (low beam) blue (high beam)
One filament usually vibrates off (particularly if you don't have original rubber mounted headlight)
    What bulb are you using?
    I use Yamaha 'Exup' 35/35w H4 (Early FZR750/1000)
I don't think I would even try a 60/55w, not sure switch contacts could handle current?

Okay, did the continuity check and yes, it's the bulb.

I have a 60/55w bulb in there now. Pardon my ignorance, but what are the switch contacts? Do you mean the electrical connections within the handlebar switch? If so, my hand controls are a modern unit from Electrosport Industries. All new wiring throughout the entire bike, modern rectifier, in-line 30amp blade fuse...

I was thinking I might buy one of those ultra-bright xenon bulbs.
    Any reason I shouldn't?

Oh, and no it is not the stock bucket Greg. I think it's EMGO.

With all new wiring and switches, you probably won't have issues running a hotter bulb. If any of the connectors or wires going to the bulb look discolored or crispy, then replace with a lower wattage bulb.

You MIGHT be able to run an HID and ballast. If anything it would be with a 35w ballast. You can score "bi-xenon" H4 HID's that will have a glare shield as well as retaining your high beam. Now, this is considering your charging system is kosher, and you have a nice sized battery. Little teeny sla batteries won't do.
