A good bench. Good tools. An understanding of how not to over do things. Over tightening ect. Vernier's and micrometers to measure everything you have apart and see what needs replacing or what doesn't. Measure twice.

I like to have a couple of different manuals, but the official honda manual is best. You would be amazed how some can differ.

Now you may know all of this, but just checking.

Also, I would replace the studs. Some people don't but I bet those studs have stretched enough to allow for a weep amongst other things.

When you get in there you will most likely find something else that needs sorting.

    That's like, your opinion, man.

would you just order bearings for the crank and things?

Plasti gage the bearings first. Wait. Does the CD250 run on plain bearings? If so, I would get them plasti gauged ricki tick. If it's a pressed crank with roller bearings you will have to get someone who can separate the crank and replace them only if they need it.

Once everything is measured and sorted then go about ordering bearings. Consult your manual on bearing types as well. With some plain bearings there might be markers on your cases indicating exactly which to go by.

It depends on what sort of life that engine has had of course, but this is why you should check.

I don't know much about that donk, but it's small cc. So chances are it's nuts have been revved off for half it's life and it could be that passed owners haven't completed routine maintenance.

Make a plan. Bag and label every single thing and keep it laid out so you remember where everything goes. You don't want to tear everything down (the easy part) then never put it back together.

yeah, i always have a collection of zip lock bags and photo everything. or sometimes i lay things down in a orderly fassion, works well unless your 4 year old decides to help :-(

well, i know it had a new head gasket, 42,000km on the clock, its got a rattle i suspect is cam chain tentioner, but i have to take the engine appart, barrels off for the cct replacement anyway apparently,

    It's a development of the 1980 125 twin.
Needle/ball bearing crank so don't worry about it unless you can feel play in big end bearings.
They really need regular oil changes, plus keep an eye on oil level.
If oil drops too low the left big end fails

For a used engine, sight unseen, that is 'said' to have low kay's. Yeah too much. How much is the shipping? If the guy can prove that the thing has only done as much as he has said, then schwing. But that's old rego papers with matching engine number.

Go for it if you can afford it, but it's still a common small cc mill. I'd offer him 100 bucks for the lot. If it's a wreckers, they should know it's worth more in pieces.
