    Brake/Taillight won't work w headlight on

Hi, I have a 73' Honda CL350 and I installed an aftermarket taillight. The original taillight has three wires...ground, power and running. The new light has on two wires...power and running (ground by touching frame). The problem with the new light is that the brake light works, but when I turn the headlight on the brake light no longer work and the taillight won't turn on. I tried a different aftermarket taillight and got the same result. I feel light there is a simple solution to this but I can't figure it out. Maybe something to do with the ground. Here is a pic of what I have. There is a youtube video of how to install the bracket and wires here . I have the same wire setup as the one in this video but mine doesn't work. Am having trouble getting an answer from the seller. Please help!

Pretty simple, you wired it wrong so something shorts when you turn on headlight. I'm sure if you leave it on long enough a wire will start smoking so you can see where the problem is
Run a separate wire for ground

Ok thanks that sounds probable. This is my first bike and I'm not too savy with the electrical side. Where do I connect the ground wire to the bulb?

ok I think I found the issue. If I take the light off of the bracket and and wire it and ground the metal base of the light housing to the frame it works...but not very consistently. Is it possible that the paint on my frame or the paint on the license plate bracket is preventing it from grounding effectively? Should I try to sand some of the paint on the bracket where it touches the bike frame?

Absolutely make sure you have a bare metal ground. Or it will bite you at the most inopportune time.

Is there any reason why mine won't ground at the bottom of the shock?

Remove paint from bracket and run a wire to the frame.
Swing arm has rubber bushings so your grounding through various moving metal components (drive chain, brake linkage, etc)
It was probably designed for a rigid frame?
