    79 Bonnie Cafe Racer

    I'm in the process of building a cafe racer out of my 79 bonnie and am looking for some solutions. I want to remove the airbox and install K+N filters on my Dellorto carbs. Does anyone have an elegant solution as to where to mount the battery and coils?

    Has anyone replaced their front end with a dual disc from a Jap bike?

    Hey b_rant maybe you should try some of the Vintage racer websites, anybody that races one of those has probably done most or all of the stuff you are thinking of. That is unless someone here has done it too!

    If tomorrow really is the first day of the rest of my life....does that mean all the shit I do today can't be held against me?

    An old solution for the coils used inte 70's by choppers and cafe racer's alike is to build a "bates box". Basically this is a box you can build to house all your coils. Once you have painted it or chromed it you can hide it in plain sight (most were usually attached to the fork down tubes but you can mount it anywhere). I have a bates box on my hond chop and I have to admit it looks cool and nobody knows what it is.

    For the battery, you can get a round style chopper oil tank that has a battery box behind it. There are ones commonly available for triumphs. If you have an OIF trumpet then an old gun camera box from a warbird might do the trick. I bought about five at a swapmeet 10 years ago and I still have a few waiting to get used in projects. Aluminum, superlight, and they look cool. Another thing I have seen done is when people put cafe racer boat tails on their bikes they mount abattery tray inside the rear bubble (that is also a good place to mount an oil tank).
