    DR650 Desert Sled?

Is anyone running an older DR650 as a stripped down trail bike or desert sled?
I am currently working on one, and trying to find a good exhaust, tire and seat setup. Open to input and suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Steve

I have no idea but it sounds like a cool project, post pictures when you have them.

actually, how close is the header pipe to 30mm ?

I think it's going to be a cool project too. I am digging into it again tonight. I'll get some measurements.
This is where I am in the strip down process. Experimenting with this seat setup. I know it's not a true "baja" type seat.

    Other then the header diameter,
it looks like my Montesa 4RT muffler and heat shield would plug right on there and you won't find a lighter exhaust system then that.

Is that a double walled header pipe? kinda looks like it,
then mine would probably plug right inside rather then outside the header and be almost the right size exhaust.

The exhaust will be a hard one to find....a good one that is. I don't think even Cobra makes one anymore...I could be wrong. I was told I got the last yoshi exhaust in california when I purchased mine many moons ago.

Over at drriders.com I think some folks use old TL1000 cans. I think there is a thread somewhere there where a post 96 exhaust was fitted on a pre-96.

Your seat looks like it would work but I've always liked my stock seat. Pre-96 seats are superior to post 96 seats but the aftermarket is there for post 96 stuff.

What's the plan for desert riding?

Awesome, thanks KnappyFeet - looks like your DR is the same year as mine - 1993? I'll check out your suggestion. We have a LOT of desert mesa out here, right in my backyard - miles and miles of sand, trails and washes.

Personally I would sacrifice some fuel range and lighting to go light weight.
Washes are like perfect run ups to vertical faces of sand pack right? i'd be up for that ride.
