header wrap/ heat tape pros vs. cons

does anyone in the forum have an opinion on the header wrap/ heat tape issue? i've had at least 4 friends that work for the local NASCAR teams (Mooresville NC "race city USA") tell me conflicting issues and benefits of the stuff and each is entirely subjective. the use of wrap/tape on a cl/cb 360 would be pretty different than the big v8's the shops use, but similar in principle. so opinions would help, and experience w/ the stuff is a big help. thanx
    -does it weaken the pipe?
-does the retained heat weaken the pipe or the moisture from riding in cool weather/ rain?
-do u tie it off every foot or so or just at beginning and end?
-does it fade/ discolor at a certain rate?
-does it really improve the function of the engine in a noticeable manner?

as i understand it the pipe does not last as long because of the large amount of heat held in by the wrap. that said, it looks bitchin'

as metal goes through heat expansion cycles it becomes more brittle. On a set of honda pipes I imagine it would take years to get to the point of cracking, but it will still probably get there. In addition header wrap traps moisture and condensation so don't be surprised when you go to rewrap them one day and the pipe is rusty underneath.

That being said, the functional aspect of header wrap is to retain heat in the pipe so that exhaust gasses travel faster out the pipe (a slight increase in scavenging). If you have a freer flowing intake (like a K&N filter in a stock airbox) then you may see a little bit of a difference in power (gain). Another advantage is that the heat that gets transferred to the oil filter from the pipes is reduced so you get better oil life as well.

More than anything header wrap on a bike gets dirty. really really dirty.

I usually secure the wrap with hitemp bands clamps at either end.

thanx for the input... on the tuono site it is very hard to get concise feedback or answers like u have given. all in all since the exhaust is not the correct one (cj not cl) i plan on wrapping the pipes to the join and leaving the muffler chrome. i think the white that will turn a tan or brown w/ wear will look good (even if it's dirty) on a dark colored bike. well baby steps first. thanx again

black header wrap is availible- I bought some from the Jegs or Summit catalogue. You could skip the 'white getting dirty' step alltogether
