Could be a fuse (and I also remember them being behind the side cover), could be a dead Regulator/Rectifier that allowed the bike to run off the battery until it went flat, could be a lose battery terminal cable, could be a dead cell in the battery....could be a lot of things, start with the simplest and work through and eliminate each.
If the mechanic removed and reinstalled the points, he would have disconnected the battery cables - maybe forgot to tighten them? I'd start with checking the main fuse and battery.
