Never heard of any cylinders being "reversed polarity". My guess is that the guy didn't know what he was doing, and couldn't get it to run with the electronic setup. Hope they didn't charge you too much for that.
Did performance diminish, and slowly die? Or did it just stop running suddenly. Does it still crank? Battery is still charged? I would go over the previous work with a fine eye to make sure they didn't screw it up. Like left a screw for the points, or as mentioned, a battery terminal loose. And of course, check all fuses for continuity. Check all plug connectors for corrosion and connection.
