Hey cafe racers,

Im pretty to this so when i found this site I was surprised. Basically I bought a 79' yamaha xs400 that some guy already started on it as a cafe racer.

Here is what i know about the bike:

-Compression: one is 150 / other is 120
-Had value clearances adjusted
-Does have some cam chain rattling
-Found out there it has a pointless ignition system which i believe came from a 1980 model.
-the front disc brakes are from a 1980 model
-The starter motor has be disabled. I notice the ignition fuse slot has been taken out completely.
-I had the carbs synced
-looks like they tried to paint the cylinder black
-The carbs need some adjustment so i plan on taking it to a shop for a possible clean up and/or rebuild.

I want to clean it up and keep the project going. Im just new to this i dont know where to look or find good parts for the bike.

Does anyone know if you can put a bigger motor in it??

Does it have a rear brake? My '78 has discs front and rear. Are those stock bars flipped upsidedown? I seem to see alot of that and I am not a fan of it at all.

the need to be twisted up more. thats why they look funny. but if the bars are comfortable to you, thats all that matters.

No those are clubman bars.

And the rear are drum brakes from the 1980 model.
Ahh I see now...I take it discs were an option and that drums were still available every year?

In order:

-compression shouldn't vary that much (more than 10 psi and I get nervous). Was that reading taken before or after valves were adjusted?
-cam chain might just have some slack. There's an adjuster for the purpose - check the adjustment in your manual
-if you're not using the starter motor, see if you can remove it and plug the holes gracefully. I'm not sure on the xs400, worth checking out as it weighs a ton. You'd be amazed at the ratio of weight removed/hp gained
-bigger motor: it's too open a question - yeah, you can put anything you want in it, given enough skill with a welder. On the other end of the spectrum, you're farming out carb cleaning, so if what you mean is, is there a bigger engine you can put in it that's easier to install than carbs are to clean? No.
-mikesxs.com has a lot of XS650 parts as well as a good lot of generic stuff, much of which will fit
-what the other folks say ain't wrong - your bars will probably both look and feel better if you rotate them forward about 30 degrees - that angle on the bars is intended to be down, not back. You might consider chopping a couple inches off of ends as well.

Incidentally, carbs are about the easiest thing on an old bike to repair, and, if no one's told you this yet, knowing how to rebuild them is the cost (and pride) of owning a vintage bike. You might as well learn now.
