I brought my wife with me to Barber this past year, and much to my delight, my wife loved the racing so much she wanted to try it out.

So we're looking for a bike to get her started. I'm thinking a 160. I've got a line on a 68 160 that a friend has out of state. I can pick that up in June. I also just found out a guy near me has a 71 CL175 that he can let go for cheap.

It looks like the most likely class (please jump in if there are other options we should consider) is the 200GP, but the AHRMA book says no later than 68. I've heard they can sometimes be flexible on years and the book even says "Honda CB/CL 160, 175cc twin, including later CB/CL175 vertical engine (all allowed 200cc)."

Does that mean later than 68? Has to right? Since a LATER VERT has to be POST 68. So what about a 71?I know it may not be the ideal bike. Or even better, maybe I can (will almost definitely) get both bikes and build up the 160 with parts from the 175 vert. I understand the top end will fit (with exhaust mod), and have even read you can scavenge the vert 175 bottom to build a 5sp 160 bottom. Again... Feel free to tell me that's crazy.

I've been speaking with teazer, who's really helped me with a ton of info, already. I'm just a little fuzzy with the AHRMA guidelines, and never really feel I get the answer I'm after when I go through their handbook.

Help me get this girl on the track. Lord knows I can't take her on the street.

The GP classes go up to 1968. Unless the specific class allows later model bikes, such as the vertical CB175 in the 200GP class. You'd be good to go with the later model CB175 in the 200GP class.

But, in my humble opinion, you'd be much better off getting any 2 stroke bike that fits the class to race in the 200GP class. There's already too damn many Hondas in that class.

Yeah. 2 stroke would also be fun. We actually have a little yamaha CS3 that we considered doing up. It's a 200cc piston port 2 stroker.

maybe a bridgestone twin would be the good choice for bike in gp 200. these bikes were fast for their competition. even the rider less good can be the fast one and win. the honda it needs a good racer and mechanic too. and then the win may be hard to get.

I ran 200GP on a Honda 175 for three years. If I were to do it again you can bet it would be on a 2 stroke. The Honda is ok but you need to throw tons of cash at the motor. In the end you still get your ass kicked by the 2 stroke guys.

Get a B'Stone, Yamaha or a Bultaco and your set.

Yeah I'm starting to lean more toward that CS3 we have... Although It's such a fun little bike to ride, I kinda hate to throw it out there and abuse with less than optimal results. Also considering finding a little CT1.

I would look at the CT1 and pick up a couple of clean ones and as many parts bikes as you can find. There is a thread going on yamahaenduro.com about roadracing the enduro singles.

Can-Am 175 T'NT? I know they're kinda rare, but they were sooooo fast as roadracers in the seventies...

But if you have the CS3 already...

CT1's would also be a good platform...
