Lookks like Rober' has started a new class, Harley Sporty's roadracers. If I was still racing, this looks like a fun class to be in! Whatta' ya' think USCRA peeps?

Didn't you ever hear about the guy in the northwest that races a Goldwing? I saw a clip of him crossed up entering a turn. I heard that he keeps the radio on while he races.

He was at Shubie one year. Nice guy. Had some scheme for selling two-stroke powered blenders. Giddy-up.

This link will take you to a few photos of the racing Goldwing being hefted back vertical by Dave Roper. Back in 2000 Dave and the T.O. guys came out here to play. While looking over the Goldwing, Dave accidently hit the starter button and ran over a CB160. Notice in the photos that the CB160 was picked up first. The black boxes at the corners of the Goldwing are Radio Shack 6" x 9" frame savers.

I think the 883 class is a real good idea. Like you I've owned a couple of sportster based bikes. My early 80's sportster didn't handle half bad with some suspension work. And we're old enough to almost remember when there were was a lot of racing going on that to win you probably had to be riding something that said Harley on it.
I'd like to see a little more flexibility in the rules when it comes to weight saving modifications but other than that I'd say they are on the right track. Every biker that races one of these is going to bring 10 -15 people with them..that makes for a nice take at the gate.
Sportsters can be pretty fun to ride fast....as most bikes with that kind of grunt are. The old KR's and XR's would go like stink too. At the very least it will be very interesting to watch.

Speakers on a Goldwing...yeah...like we need anything else making people think vintage racing is a joke.
I notice that Honda is giving out $8 million in contingency money this year....none of it to vintage racers...even though WERA does get some, as does CCS, LRRS.

If it's a formula type of class then it should make for some close racing. I think it will be fun to watch.
In a past life racing bicycles I was on some teams that were lucky to have a good level of sponsorship. We made great effort to stay in touch with the sponsors with up dates,results, etc so they knew their resources were going. I think this American Twins class would be a great thing to keep the New England Harley dealers happy with their support of USCRA.

I endurance raced a 883 when they first came out with the new engine in the 80s. This one had Goldwing 1200 front end on it and Suzuki GS1100 bodywork. This bike came out the back door of the factory and had a few development parts in it. My team mate that has it was told to scrap it out after they were done dyno testing the engine so he scrapped it into his van with the understanding that neither it nor any components from it end up on the street. We raced it at Road America and it was quite slow on those looong straights. It handled well and was lots of fun. We didn't finish the 6hr endurance because it started pumping oil into the aircleaner.

I hate to say it, but I've hung up my spurs. I sold off the B'stone to Larry hayden and that sidecar went to Tim Kennedy. You know, I was fine with retiring, but that damn Coy went and started a spec' class that really looks to be fun. Of course, of all the bikes I raced, the big honkin' stuff was the best hands down, and I can't think of what would be more fun that a pack of sporty's going at it. The Harley guys will be freaking.
I guess my "sport" riding will be in the woods this year, I belong to a very good trail riding club that is local and quite active. I've got a 99' 200cc Gas Gas EC with a plate on it and it's perfect for around here.
I've still got some vintage stuff to be building, just scored a good 500 Triumph lower end for my bobber, and then there's a couple of Van Teck projects to be finished and that H1 of mine. I've also got that Model A pickup Ratrod project, bought a good running Ford V8 flattie to drop in that, love the sound of them.
