Best way to set the 175 tensioner is to pull the plugs, loosen up the lock nut, back off the tensioner bolt....slowly turn the engine counter clockwise until you feel it trying to lift some valves....this puts all the slack at the back of the chain where the roller is. While holding the crank there, tighten the tensioner bolt. Then you can let go of the crank and tighten down the lock nut.
To check how well it's working. with the alternator cover still off, take off the point cover. Put a wrench on the crank and rock it back and forth...watch the cam/point cam, movement as you move the crank. There should be almost no noticable movement in the crank without also moving the camshaft.
