Beemer guys I know use Easy-Off oven cleaner on their R bike cases, says it works great.

don't let is sit too long it can be very damaging to aluminum. If left on too long it can cause craters in the aluminum and start the white podery aluminum corssion process. Spray on, wipe off, wipe down with a damp rag to remove any residue.

I agree with the above. Use cold, stand for a minute or two, maybe lightly scrub with a brissel brush, wipe off, rinse with hot water.
