well i'm going to be the fucktard in the middle...not my usual position i might add. adjustability is only important until the right position is figured out. then as ron popiel says "set it and forget it" . and as texy said..."who gives two shits which way to go" on a street bike. if your body is correctly positioned, especially your hands, and if the controls fit, it doesn't matter. stupid are dents in the tank, messed up controls, and bad ergonomics. stupid is not exluded by one option vs. the other. look at champs clip-ons...they are really nicely made...better construction than the originals. clubmans vs. clip-ons...i have clip-ons on my racer and clubmans on my (identical machine...250 metralla) street bike (which is all-giro-day comfortable). both solutions are correct for their respective applications. had clip ons for an earlier street itteration but found them unacceptable due to the position not the style. properly angled clips would have been o.k. (all be it a bit low for my 46 years of age). champ probabley has some high grade clubs too and i don't think he's gay. not that there's anything wrong with that.

wow! sorry for opening that can of worms! thank you for all you responses, i am a little older and the way it sounds clips on are fine if i was ten years younger, clubmans sound like my choice at the moment (omars sells the adjustable type for about the same price as the clip ons). my biggest question was how they would affect my wrist and i think that was answered.

my bmw was a wreck that i picked up, i have always dreamed of one of these. with being in a wreck things needed replacing, so instead of replacing i started stripped it down. i trimmed out about half of the wiring harness, didnt get the side covers with it so that was easy, i have two seats for it a stock bench style for giving my kids rides and a stock one that i cut in half and removed about 6 inches, so now i have a solo seat. took a xs650 tank and cut it down for a rear seat cowl. that i am still working on. i will post so pixs of that when i get it done.

i had a set of drags on a kz650, the way the throttle cables came out the bottom they would rub a little on the tank and rubbed the paint. that bike the drags where not the right set up on.

I am not sure you are thinking about the problem in the right way. Statements like:

"the way it sounds clips on are fine if i was ten years younger"

show that you are still only thinking about one type of clip-on and one type of mounting (below the top clamp). Most modern stock bikes use above the top clamp mounted clipons that have some rise to them that actually make them more comfortable than the old clipons and even most clubmans. Telefix and tomaselli clipons usually have some rise and to them and are also adjustable as to the angle of the bar and could be comfortable even without rearsets.

It sounds like you have made your choice but thinking that clipons are not good for you because you are older is purely myth. Just as there are cheap clubmans there are cheap clipons as well. Sometimes a cheap clipons or cheap clubmans are all you need (most cb350 twins don't seem to have a problem with any kind of bar for example), sometimes they just wont work. Before you pull the trigger on it look at all the options out there. For example, most sport bikes of the 80s have the raised clipons and fork sizes similar to the older 70's bikes and can be had on ebay for stupid cheap.

Manufacturers spend millions on bike egoronomics, this can have a trickel down effect on older bikes too if you can retorfit the parts. My point is they spend millions because it is a complex issue, not something easily solved by a few minutes on the internet.

good luck.

I'm rapidly approaching the toothless wobbly phase of life but I love clip ons. Some years ago I had an SRX with the clip ons mounted above the top triple tree and hated them. I put them here they belonged and felt a lot better for doing it. I was still comfortable and they didn't hit the tank. As Geeto67 says explore all options before you choose.

actually, its proven that the hunched over leaned position of modern style sportbikes causes prostate problems. because of where the weight sets and the position of your body. i have 2 very good freinds who have had problems and both of their doctors told them it was from riding in that position. one has a newer ducati st and a /2, the other bmws with clubmans, rearsets and other low bars and various other bikes with that styling. both of them suffered from an inflamed prostate. i thought it was just cuz they are both old. i guess its a combination of both. sucks.

you know, lawyer lamps.... you see them on movies all the time... they are usually brass and green......ugly.. i was referring to the turn signals... kinda longish and bulky and ugly... you know, like lawyer lamps.....or library lamps even......they are like rectangular shaped....really ugly and totally destroy the bike visually... as bad as the stock honda tailights....UGLY.

actually the correct accurate name for those lamps is a "Banker's Lamp". you used to see them in accounting firms and libraries all the time. I agree they are ugly but I have never seen one in use in a law firm (I have seen them for decoration) without a library attached.

No shit Joe... about a year ago I was doing more riding than I've ever done - had the time, had the bikes. One was a CB450 with clips, the other a CB200 with clubmans. Got an enlarged prostate. It ain't exactly science, but I can believe there's a relationship...

You know, in retrospect I really wish I still had that CB200. It was a piece, but if it was still around I'd figure out how to shoehorn a 350 engine in there. It could've really benefitted from another 150 ccs.

i think the doctor who said your enlarged prostate was due to the "cafe position" is trying to get you to stop riding motorcycles. for over twenty five years i've been riding and racing bicycles with even more extreme cafe positions than any motorcycle and i've still got great flow, volume, and no leakage either. and of course all my motorcycles have me riding in the "cafe postion" as well. you have to see the movie "worlds fastest indian". burt munro (anthony hopkins) finds out that ground up dried dog balls taken with water relieves him of his prostate symptons. said it (dog ball powderr) tasted bad. give that a try before giving up riding your clip-on/clubman racer.

i know other people who seem to have no problem, turnbull, but im telling you, its a contributing factor. 2 different doctors saying the same thing. no way its coincidence.

i went to school for interior design and worked in a id shop for 5 years. used to to be an asid member, before you had to go to school and prove yourself you could just pay the 300 and get the damned card. thats how i know about sewing machines. i also worked as a merchandiser at jordans for 5 years. doing windows/displays in the boston store. fun job. i was mostly the "lifts heavy things" guy and the tech/fix it guy. but i won a couple of accolades and mentions in industry rags for displays.

all this is probably why jb didnt show at the bar last week!

update, i found a set of clip ons that are can be angle adjusted and if needed a different mount so it can raised up a couple inches. these seem to have every thing everyone said. nice thing was it was the same price for them as most clip ons or adjustable clip ons.
