this is a flower that blossomed on my porch this morning. that is a quarter in the corner to provide scale. unfortunately there isn't a smell feature on the web to share the smell of dead opossum that it gives off.

i live in austin but they are native to somewhere much more arid. somewhere that doesn't have bees to help with pollination. the colors are supposed to mimic rotting flesh and in some of the other species it's pretty effective.

here'a another one i have, this one has flowers less than an inch across.

yeah-

they're a succulent/cactus-like plant called Stapelia (starfish flower), they're native to south africa and in the milkweed family... which, in the states, we mostly think of a meadow plant with big seed pods that are polinated my monarch butterflys. and yep, they've evolved a rotting flesh scent to attract flys as pollinators. i've never grown this plant, but there are a lot of others that use the same smell to attract their pollinators.

here's the king....amorphophallus

ill never forget tim lookignup at the trees in the campground at summit saying, "yeah, those trees are budding" the nearest branch had to be 40" away and it was about 10 at night.

oh yeah, the beers probably helped too.

in latin, amorphophallus = Mis-shapen penis. Since the corpse flower's name is amorphophallus titan it is actually GIANT mishapen penis....

Otherwise known as the Geeto67 Flower<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

no word on whether the smells are the same.

one of these days I would like to expirence a corpse flower bloom in person.

the amorphophallus will grow in austins climate, at least seasonally. i used to work for a landscaper with a sense of humor who planted one in the flower bed beside the outside seating at a deli.

geet0-

bbg and nybg (brooklyn and new york botanical gardens) often try to grow one for the sheer novelty of the thing and ususally do a fair amount of press to intice the general public into the conservatories....so keep an eye out. both places have more than enough to entertain someone with a plant-based curiosity whether or not the copse-cock is blooming. oh, then there's wave hill, which is one of the contry's best pulic gardens up in riverdale.it's a damn cool garden overlooking the hudson which should be at it's peak for the next couple of weeks....as a disclaimer, i worked there as a gardener for three years, but it's still worth a visit.
