Im trying to make rearsets for my honda cb550. Im having problems with fabricating the brake lever and linkage. If anybody has any info or links of pictures I can use as referance, please let me know

i guess it depends on how much tooling you have. most of the time people who dont have alot of tooling frankenstein parts and pieces together from the original. brazing or welding parts and sections together. sometimes you can flip over an old shifter and use that. sometimes you can use an old shifter by, fabricating an axle to go where the shifter rod came through, and then mounting that to a plate in front of your peg. or you can cut the hole off, and bolt directly though the shifter. sometimes they have to be shortened up. you can use the same plate to mount the peg too. my opinion is rearsets are something you buy just because they can be a pain in the ass to fabricate if you dont have alot of spare parts kicking around or the tooling to do it well. some older bikes lend themselves to converting better than others. if you can find some 305 superhawk pegs, they are primo for a conversion. there are also various kinds of cable conversions you can do too. the superhawk rear brake is cable operated already.

if you decide to buy something, the tarrozis are cheap (i think about or under 200) and you make your own linkages. in other words, they come with the pegs and levers, just no rods or cables. so you get to make some parts, but the hard work is done. you can use all thread or rod and thread it yourself. try www.mcmaster.com for misc parts and pieces. you'll need to give them a business name before they'll ship to you but just make one up. or have it shipped to work. they dont care. as long as you pay em right off. they have tons of linkages and those little ball joint ends, i cant remember what theyre really called.

there are a couple of pics from mikes bike. there are some really good detail shots of the brake linkage for the bsa. they are scratch built from dunstall rear sets. the plates and the rest of the linkages are custom deals. obviously theyve been on the track a couple of times but since they are steel and plate alum, you just bend em back. keep in mind mike has a ton of metal working stuff in his studio. files saws welding stuff and the rest. im just glad he never hurts himself with any of it. anyone else got a pic of a set of scracth built ones??

Yeah... put them under the "how to" with duck tape and safety wire page. I really like Mike but I really don't using his bike as an example is such a good idea, or atleast with out some type of warning. I will put a set of scratch built rear sets sometime tomorrow. Also if this for a 550 four. You can get a kit that bolts right up for around $200. Or just grab set of pegs and bracket from a Hawk GT and weld two gussets in the frame and bolt it right on.

dude, youre too funny.i was hoping that from my example hed get an idea of what and how to do. if he wants a nice pic, milan has some modern duc rearsets on his 350gp bike. they are really cool looking. its funny, mikes stuff doesnt look that nice, but when ive ridden it all, its really easy to ride and very comfortable! i still get a kick out of the battery box. are you sore at all from riding that bike? i was thinking about what you were saying about the bike. the larger spools, what does that really do? other than save some cheap bearings maybe. seems to me the rims are whats going to take the beating. ive never bent or broken a spool or axle, but ive potato-chipped plenty of rims. the other thing was, remember how when you went to elementary school and it seemed so big, then when you went back it was like tiny town? i think your suffereing the same thing with the bike!

Well Joe... when was the last time you put some abuse on your bicycle? I think for the most part the bikes are designed for lighter people and also the the amount of stress from what kids now-a-days are putting on the bikes is much diferent from when we used to bike. The bike that I bought was purpose built for taking jumps. I've broken, cracked, and bent frames when I weighed 130 pounds. I'm sure I could possibly hurt my bike not so much from screwing around, but maybe crashing from not landing right or something of that nature. I mostly bought this model from past experiences with breakage and the fact that my mind is going to want to do things that my body isn't going to remember to do. I see injury in my near future.

i remember breaking a buddy of mines (?) mongoose in half back when i was about 13. he still bitches about it to me. i remember i had a redline with z rims. i saved for seemingly months for those rims. then bent the hell out of them watching them spring back into shape doing 360 and 180 bunnyhops. i also have a gt borrego with and old rock shox. i used to ride from winchester to boston almost everyday to work. that was when i had my bianchi mt bike. living next to the fells provided plenty of oppertunity to to mtn bike. when i rode to work, sometimes id come back on mass ave and go through arlington. a nice ride. ive done the tour de graves in boston way before they shortened it to 20 miles or whatever stupid length it is/was many times. it used to be 40 miles to all of the grave yards around boston, and id ride to the meeting in the common from winchester then back home afterwards. i gave myself a concussion when i crashed riding to work one day. i was lost for 15 mins. when i got to work i didnt even know if i still worked there. i had to ask at the desk. i have faceplanted onto concrete and busted my front teeth. still broken. broke a rear derailer crossing atlantic ave at summer street. face kissed the bars, and i went down hard in the intersection. of course at rush hour, trying to beat the light, round 515 in the afternoon. that one hurt too. so ive taken plenty of abuse, and those are just the recent ones! so, how do you keep the rims true?? i still cant figure that one out.

Novella sells Raask rear sets for the 550four Hondas. I think that would be your easiest way of getting rear sets on your bike. If Jeremy the guy owns and runs this forum ever gets back on, he will be able to set you up with the info you need.

If there still trueable, I'll sit down and true them. If not I will buy new wheels. I never really had major problems with this but we'll see.

novella is no longer. i have tried to reach them in palatine illinios and they are just gone. i used to order parts from them at the begining of every season. levers and other parts. i tried back at the begining of last season looking for spares for my race bike. the tarrozis are cheaper and better quality. they also sell several different styles. just my opinion. check out this site

they are a baltimore area company filming the tv show about vinatge motorcycle racing. tom tunrball works with the guy sometimes i guess. chris marshall aparently has hours of video. some great onboard of he and buff harsh battling it out.

Yeah but do the tarrozis 's come with mounting hardware that bolts up to the mates 550four with out leaving him with ???'s , tarrozis are definately a nice rear set though. Also that vintage race site was pretty cool.

i would bet my mother that the universal pegs that they sell at discovolantemoto.com would work and the price is right. you'll have to come up with some linkages, but thats what mcmaster's for. or i think they carry a ton of spare parts for rearsets on the site. hell, i might order me up a set!

ill see what i can get from chris as far as the vids go. they are really really cool. although i think theyre trying to not let too much of it get out. mikeo has the vids from the end of the sbk season. you should definitely get them from him and check it out. there was a huge crash in the ss race at imola.

the mounting bracket is a little overkill, big cast iron mount. but its definitely strong enough to take a crash or two....or three. and its just a bolt on deal, will take you ten minutes.

I was just saying Joe, for Honda 500/550 fours you'll want the mounting hardware cause theres not a lot places to mount to on the bike if I remember correctly from when I was tainted with a 550/four.

Also I got the BMX with the big axles so Jeremy can ride it at the track.

i used to buy them right from the importer. now i think they all come into the country through various channels. maybe not one importer exclusively. but i dont really know. they were the guys listed on the back of the fancy book that came withem. the ones for the 350 bolt to the passenger mounts. which kinda sucks cuz when you stand on them and really jump and donw they bend. probably good in the event of a crash though. im not familiar with the 500/550 mounting position. as long as you get the mechanics and can ake them fit up, you can get them to work. i know alot of people who buy from disco too. anyway, i think we've beat this one to death. and the answer is, spend 2x as much as you wanted, get something nice, and then go ride.

isnt that the way it always is anyway? aaron, id like to ride your bike sometime too if you let me. i promise i wont break it.
