It's going to be held in Argentina & Chile this year. They're still going to call it the "Dakar Rally".
Whatever, it's still cool.

It's too bad they had to call off last years race but it didn't sound like it was going to be safe at all. It's bad enough getting lost in the desert without having to worry about assholes with guns trying to kill you from behind bushes on the side of the road. It should be an interesting race with the very different terrain they will have on SA.

If it is Argentina and Chile, does that mean they are going to have to deal with the Andes Mtns and the Atacama Desert? If so that will be some awsome terrain.

On a similar topic, the Baja 1000 is coming up in a couple weeks. I've been doing some woods ("trail") riding this summer at a friends place, a family owned lumber facility with lots of acreage, singletrack mostly. The oldest son is going down to pre-ride the course for one of the teams this year. The dad used to race Baja back when they started racing there. The son is wicked fast and depending on how things go this year, he may get bumped up onto the race team next year.
I've always wanted to do that, but the level of skill and competence required for that shit has gone waaay over my head.

Not to mention that the race is just freakin crazy. Watch the movie "Dust to Glory"

Hell, the Mexican spectators put obstacles on the course so they have something to watch. Northern Mexico is going through another round of drug wars, killing hundreds of people a year. Crazy place.

i'll again offer my idea to move the race back to paris...dakar.

each team gets equipped with an apache helicopter and one of those bradley fighting vehicles. goal is to not only finish the race first, but call in as many airstrikes and kill as many insurgent terrist assholes they can. bonus points awarded for body counts. body counts can be formulated to take time off race.

sell it to the outdoor network and become bazillonaires when it take a 30 nielsen share.

thoughts?

I've been trying to explain to some idiot on another forum why we won't see a Dakar type race on continental US soil... he thinks it's because of environmentalists. I think he blames everything on "Enviro Whacko's" (sic).

Anyway, I hope we get to see some coverage of it this year.

Actually Tex, the more I think of it, there's no reason they couldn't use some of your idea. The Apache's could provide the cool helicopter shots for race coverage after they clear the road for the racers...

Yep, I knew there was still some rallying (?) going on in the US, though I must say I wasn't aware that they were allowing cars and motorcycles in the same event, but it still pales in comparison to a Dakar type event...teams, size, length, terrain etc. Which is not to say the NASA stuff isn't cool, it is. But it ain't Dakar, and I don't think we'll see something on that scale in the continental US. You need 3rd world countries to get away with that kind of shenanigans.

True. Since its hard to televise and spectate, then the audience is a smaller group. So there's no money for it, except through enthusiasts.
