Difference Between Rims

What's the difference between motocross rims and road bike rims? Are flanged much better than non-flanged? I saw this ad on Craigslist and was wondering if they're worth looking in to.

When spoke lacing patterns came up I tried to remember how many diffrent ones I've seen and could'nt stop. So I had to look it up. Although a lot of these patterns would work, besides 'the look' I don't see why you'd bother.
