So I just sold my XR600, and am looking to replace it with something newer and lighter. Anyone here ride dirt? Off-track excusions while crashing does not count...

Still haven't decided 2stroke or 4stroke, but it needs lights as I wanna do turkey runs and need the lights to be street-legal. Anyone have a favorite dirt ride?

Maybe in the spring I'll organize a CR.net and skullsgroup dirt ride.

I want to have a dirt bike by next year.

Believe it or not... I want a 125-250cc motocross two stroke...or a 250cc four valve fourstroke.

I don't do a lot of woods riding, I have about 3 acres cleared. I want wheelies, rooster tails and slides.

Don't want a four stroke "trail" bike. Want a motocross bike...or something inbetween a trail bike and a motocross bike... I know, I know...torque is nice...but screaming hp is nice too.

the fact that you guys are talking about 2-stroke dirt bikes is a joke. especially for woods. Dylan Eustace and i rode some dirt this summer...he has a CR-125 and it really doesn't work that well for woods. he constantly uses the clutch, and he makes it work, but if there's one thing to be learned about dylan it's that just because he can do something doesn't mean you can too.
i've heard 250 4-stroke motocross bikes are good for the woods too, but as far as lights? i dunno about that.
i've got a KTM 450 EXC and it fuckin rocks in the dirt. it's a lot of power, but not too much...and just silly amounts of torque. it's also got lights for the street, and it comes with a dash setup that includes a speedo, odometer, clock, trip meter, and lots of other goodies. i've ridden it as a street bike and a dirt bike and i think it kicks ass. people insist that it's heavy for a woods bike, but i didn't find it to be that way at all.
beyond pitching my bike to everyone, i think 4-strokes are key. johnny, you can try my KTM out next spring and tell me if you still want "screaming hp".
so just to review: DON'T BUY A 2-STROKE WOODS BIKE. it just doesn't make sense.

You'll notice that my post said I DON'T do a lot of woods riding. I don't have much desire to ride around trees. I like open field riding, hauling butt, little jumps, sliding around stumps and low gear hill climbing on a two stroke.

I could live with a 4 stroke MX bike. But I DON'T want some heavy ass Honda XR style dirt bike...well not as heavy as the old school XR's I've ridden.

Next year... frontierland.... barrel riding!! Was trying it out on my little pit bike this year.. lots of fun. Just pick two barrels 150' apart and lap them as fast and close as you can... I mean touching the barrel with a handle bar close.

Don't make me dig up photos of me back in the 70's getting big air on TM Suzukis.

my bad my bad, 2-strokes still aren't as good.

Z's got it right for the most part. The only 2stroke dirtbike I'd consider is the KTM 200EXC. Powerfull enough for the sand but still useable in the woods.

But 4stroke engine braking... come flying into a burmed corner, kick it down a gear, drop the clutch, nail the gas and ride the rear wheel out of the corner... at least that's what I try to do. Most times I barrel into the corner and wash out the front and get a nice closeup look at the sand.

I'm also drawn to the WR400 and WR426. The Honda CRF450s have awesome power, but need to be re-ringed after eveny 10hrs of riding. No thanks.
how about the drzs??

the yamahas are cool though.

i just heard of a crf250x for sale it has about 800 miles on it.....i currently have a 1974 ts 400 and a 1993 xr 250 and i have been riding dirt since i was nine....i love dirt....if you are looking for a four stroke a good place to look is www.fourstrokes.com

holy christ on a crutch, a 300cc two-stroke dual-sport KTM legal for the streets? you'd frighten some guys on GSXRs.
i'd recommend KTMs though, mine has been pretty good. i think joe's right about DRZs, i've heard good things about them. the street kits are pretty good for them too as far as i understand it. WRs are wimpy in my book, they just look wimpy don't they? i think the "WR" stands for Wimpy Ride. before you make too much fun of the WR though, you should think about how much road riding you want to do. my KTM's bad ass, but the seat is not for sitting on. do you want it street legal to get from trail to trail or to actually ride around?

i like this one. light like a 250, but with some extra pop, and is probably ready for some lights and blinkers.

I think thats one I would like to have.

It doesn't take much to make them street legal, especially in NH. All you need is a bicycle bulb horn, headlight, and brakelight. Knobbies are ok for the street.

I'll be doing very little road riding. I live 1/2mile from some decent trails, and for other riding areas I've got the van.

Have y'all seen the CRF250s and WR250s? Rev like a 2stroke, weight as little as a 2stroke, but have a flatter powerband and engine braking.

Very tempting. But something about a KTM300EXC is calling me. Its one of those things... you know its a bad idea, but still.... like when you have $200 in your pocket, your in Thailand, in the redlight district....
And you see a 16 year old leering at you from a window..

aaaahhh, 16 year old. uh, I mean dirtbikes, yeah!

I haven't ridden a dirtbike since I was a kid and all this talk has me wishing I had some land. well, and a dirtbike too. I actually have an old Harley (amf) SX175 that I've been meaning to put back together. that's right, sheer power! watch out ktm! was seized from sitting but I put a little oil in the cylinder and rocked the wheel back and forth after a day or so and she came free. it's a great story, I'll tell ya!
After everyone gets dirt bikes I'll have a dirt bike weekend up at my place... I've got 12 acres to ride on surround by a few hundred more that no one seems to care about.
