street riding sucks. oil, tar strips and expansion joints arent fun. jersey barriers, potholes, shit in the road. all of it sucks. the track is where its at. most fun parties, greatest people youll ever want to meet, except for champ, and mike leaves a bit to be desied. it rocks. best waste of money you'll ever find. and like alot of people, once you start racing, you'll probably find yourself riding ont he street less. because it sucks.

these were the bikes I posted in another thread that I currently have and can cut up. The others are too nice or too far gone.

- 1971 T500: Not really keen on cutting this bike up because it is clean nice running stock street bike. However it came with two other engines (one already prepped for comp) and I have a line on a spare frame. Not really keen on racing on a drum.

- 1974 GT380s: I have two that I using to make one cafe racer bike (actually Rosko is holding one for me at his place). One has a really nice front end and brake setup, the other has a good clean running engine. I was actually going to sell these because I really don't need them, but If I can find a purpose for them all the better.

- 1976 Kawasaki h1: My former drag bike. They closed the local drag strip to me and I don't have NHRA approved drag leathers nor a desire to drive an hour to a track that will only let me compete in a bracket class. Lot of stuff braced on this bike, safety wired, etc. Currently torn down for conversion to road use.

- 1978 Cb750F. Converted cafe racer. Bought this From Rosko (who turned me on to this site). Makes a nice street bike. I have a spare 811cc engine I could throw in if rules allow. Heavy bike though.

I would probably go with the GT380. I know almost nothing about them except they are a two stroke, and while they are probably not slow, they probably aren't smokin fast either.... on par with an RD350 maybe? Would probably be a good bike to get your feet wet with. And you have two of them...always a big plus when you go racing. And it doesn't sound like you are REAL attached to them.

You could be on the track next year. You would run it in Period III middleweight Supervintage. Hey, the first couple of years just finishing races is the big challenge...by then you'll have a handle on if you want to go faster, slower or just do what your doin.

The GT would probably make a reasonably dependable middle of the pack race bike. Hey...wouldn't it be fun to build a race bike? Once it's built you will eventually race it :)

The gt380 is not barn burning fast but no slouch. The suzuki two strokes have a powerband that starts a little off idle and goes to redline, they behave almost like a 4 stroke. Compared to an RD350 they have a lot more bottom end but less top end, so I guess it evens out. I'd say the thing makes about 40-45hp at the rear wheel which isn't so bad stock. I have one that is in pretty nice shape with a bad gearbox (installed incorrectly) and a new top end. It also has a lot of internal mods to the front forks done by the previous owner. The Other bike has a nice engine but was in a police impound yard which speaks volumes as to the abuse it must have taken. I only have a title for one, which is probably a good thing since I'll probably just use the frame for the one without for racing in case I prang it. There is a suzuki specalist who sells race parts for these bikes (sundail motorsports) so somebody must be racing them.

I don't get it....if you are a shop, you are supposed to be using someone else's disposable income

The majority of the "verbal" types here are accomplished bike builders and vintage racers. A lot spend the majority of their disposable income and time building and racing bikes, traveling to races all over the Northeast. A bunch of us all race in the same clubs, USCRA, AHRMA, WERA and know each other well from years of racing together.
Caferacer.net is just a small fraction of their participation in the world of motorcycles. Numerous guys with several race bikes and pretty much their entire life outside of work wrapped up in racing. Some of the guys like Aaron, John D., Unga, Chris M., Zack are very skilled, very fast riders. And a bunch of others are seriously dedicated racers on their way to becoming fast. Some are incrediably fast like Zack...who can manage 1:17's around Loudon on an RS125.

It's an amazing collection of bike building and racing talent here, you might not be able to tell amid all the silliness. A lot of us know each other on a personal level and we tend to converse as if we were at the track together. From carrying the back wheel into turn three to building carbon fiber parts, to designing and selling engine components, there is someone here that can, and has done it.

They may seem stupid...but it's just a disguise.
