DR650 Desert Sled?

4088 Views 22 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  knappyfeet
Is anyone running an older DR650 as a stripped down trail bike or desert sled?
I am currently working on one, and trying to find a good exhaust, tire and seat setup. Open to input and suggestions.

Thanks,

Steve

I have no idea but it sounds like a cool project, post pictures when you have them.

actually, how close is the header pipe to 30mm ?

I think it's going to be a cool project too. I am digging into it again tonight. I'll get some measurements.
This is where I am in the strip down process. Experimenting with this seat setup. I know it's not a true "baja" type seat.

Other then the header diameter,
it looks like my Montesa 4RT muffler and heat shield would plug right on there and you won't find a lighter exhaust system then that.

Is that a double walled header pipe? kinda looks like it,
then mine would probably plug right inside rather then outside the header and be almost the right size exhaust.

Awesome. I'll look into it. Montesa 4RT muffler

Thank you!

The exhaust will be a hard one to find....a good one that is. I don't think even Cobra makes one anymore...I could be wrong. I was told I got the last yoshi exhaust in california when I purchased mine many moons ago.

Over at drriders.com I think some folks use old TL1000 cans. I think there is a thread somewhere there where a post 96 exhaust was fitted on a pre-96.

Your seat looks like it would work but I've always liked my stock seat. Pre-96 seats are superior to post 96 seats but the aftermarket is there for post 96 stuff.

What's the plan for desert riding?

Awesome, thanks KnappyFeet - looks like your DR is the same year as mine - 1993? I'll check out your suggestion. We have a LOT of desert mesa out here, right in my backyard - miles and miles of sand, trails and washes.

Personally I would sacrifice some fuel range and lighting to go light weight.
Washes are like perfect run ups to vertical faces of sand pack right? i'd be up for that ride.
Finally getting around to posting an update on the DR650 build that I've been slowly working on.
Here is a photo of the original setup (NOT MY BIKE) and some work in progress pics.

I'm open to feedback and suggestions - I KNOW on this forum I won't get ANY criticism ;-)

I think you might appreciate a foot peg upgrade, those stock ones suck.
Wider pegs shifted rearwards a fair amount would really transform the way it handles now that you made it a solo bike.

Great suggestion. Still working on the exhaust situation as well.
Definitely wider pegs. I've never ridden in the desert I assume you spend much of the time standing. You need to be over your pegs but you don't want to move your weight back too much as it will just make it under steer. Shorter tank or move it forward might be an option.

Yes, most of the time standing. Any suggestion on a particular peg that you think would work? I have moved tank forward quite a bit. It feels very low profile and quite comfortable now.

I have Hebo, Talon and S3 pegs, all of them are great, I think the Hebo were the most economical and Talon was the most expensive. All of them kill your boots quickly but not as bad as the kickstarter does.

For boots you should give serious consideration to trials boots instead of conventional MX boots, trials boots are way more flexible in the ankle and sole, way more comfortable to walk in. Gaerne leather boots are top of the line and expensive, Forma boots are a little cheaper, break in very fast by comparison but also wear out faster.
... get them in brown oiled leather and you won't look like a power ranger wearing neon leg casts ;)
Large fuel tank is very typical on a desert bike, you will be using a lot of fuel and covering a lot of distance.
Dropping extra coin on good boots and pegs will be an instant huge improvement if you are currently riding on shite pegs and wearing work boots or hiking boots.
Remember toes down and knees bent for going up steep hill, heels down knees bent and arms fully extended for going down steep hills,
moving the pegs back a whole bunch will help with your finding traction and keeping the front light in deep sand ;) keep your feet and weight on the pegs or you must be stuck.

... I rode MX before I rode Trials.
Looks nice.

I never could get my DR to run right with anything other than the stock air box. Maybe you're having better luck than I did with your pod filter. I did the airbox mod which cut some of the top of the airbox off... Worst mod ever. Maybe on some Dyno somewhere it improves horsepower somewhere but all I ever noticed was a horribly dirty filter all the time and some hiccups off throttle......and it's getting harder to find stock unmolested are boxes.

I see you're going for the open triangle look. As a suggestion I relocated my rear brake Reservoir closer to the master cylinder. Not for the open triangle look but because I just never got that warm fuzzy feeling with that reservoir hose being so close to the exhaust pipe. It's hot around there in the summer. I know it tilts pretty hard left but as long as you keep the reservoir full you'll never have a problem. I did this mod probably 60k ago and never had any kind of problem with it.

There's also some nice wide pegs on eBay for it.... Like under $25 or something.

Knappyfeet - Nice suggestion on the rear brake master. It fit easily there? I threw an Uni filter and jetted up. Seems to run quite well at 6500ft Elev.
I'm fab-ing metal triangle covers. I'll post pics if they come out ok.

Trialsrider I have some Icon Elsinor boots I have been riding light off-road with. They are great, but looking at Trials Boots

Thanks, guys!

It fit okay but it was really a tight fit. I made a little carbon fiber piece to hold the reservoir.... That's when I was making a bunch of pieces carbon fiber in the effort to lower the weight of the bike.

I was never really a fan of the open triangle look but in a weird way I think it might work for your bike. I'm anxious to see the covers. Some expanded metal Tastefully done could be a nice look as well... Maybe painted the same blue color of the frame or whatever you're going to paint
Finally getting around to posting the latest mods on the DR. It's running great, been taking it to the Flat Tack oval and it actually runs quite well.
He's a pic of the current state
