Is there a listing somewhere of engines that can be directly swapped with bikes?

I am curious because say tomorrow the one in my CB360 dies, and I cant source a similar replacement, anyway to know what else will bolt on??

sorry kid, without a welder, metal skills, and a vivid imagination the only thing that will swap into that frame is another cb360. and before you ask about the cb350 motor, no it won't fit.

350 will go into 360 with 'minimal' :D work, it's the other way round that's impossible without major reconstruction. (360 into 350 chassis)
350 motor is shorter and slightly narrower than 360.
It may be possible to fit 350/400 F motor without too much cutting/welding but I haven't tried

Go to HF and buy a $100 welder and a chopsaw and you can squeeze any engine into it. Just because the design of the engine is the same...don't think it's gonna fit. I.E., oh it's a inline 4 so and so CC so it's pretty close. I tossed a CM400(400cc inline twin) lump into a XS400(400cc inline twin) frame and let me tell you. Without stretching the lower frame rails apart and doing some hacking it wasn't going to go in. Not to mention the engine won't even go in with the rocker cover on. Once it's in, the cover will barely slide on, but it's on. If you want it in, you'll find a way is what did it for me.

does your minimal work include the new custom exhaust you are going to have to make as well or just cutting and rewelding the motor mounts? also IIRC there is a part of the 350 that sticks through the bottom of the frame (oil sump) that doesn't fit between the rails of a 360 frame.


most of the time you can get offset sprockets or custom sprockets to make the driveline mate up, it is the mounts and nature of the engine that makes a difference. some frames are not big enough to take anything in but what was designed to fit, others are so large you can wedge anything in there (I once saw a 1973 kawasaki h1 with an fzr600 motor in the frame)

I think there was a reason there was a ":D" after 'minimal', Geeto.

The op is asking for straight swaps. Very few of those, really, which is what I was getting at with my answer. But, as other people have mentioned, where there's a will, theres a way, and where there's lack of skill, there's a big heap of scrap metal where parts of a bike used to be.

sorry, I don't speak smiley face.....wasn't sure if you were kidding or you have built a 350 in a 360 frame.

sometimes tracing the evolution of a bike kind of tips you off to whether something is going to bolt right in. For instance the cb500 four evolved into the 550 and then the 650 and those engines swap into their frames. Smae goes for the cb450 and the 500T, the GS450 and GS500. Other bikes are variations on other models like XT's and SR's, or cbr929 and honda 919. The problem with the 360 is it was mostly a clean sheet design, robbing only a few small suspension bits from the 350s parts bin.

XR500 motor fits in without too much trouble apparently.
One of my 360's in Britain that was stolen got that treatment.
Police not interested unless I go back to prosecute current 'owner'.

Engines can be re-built - if you're worried that your engine might go pop tomorrow, you can re-build it on Sunday.

XL500 or Ascot motors fit into 500 interceptors really easily, too.
