I have a 1979 cx500c, and I am looking to get an aftermarket gear indicator for it. I don't have the technical know how required to just know wether or not it would work with the bike. I have found one that I like and need help on figuring out if it would be a worthwhile purchase or a waste of money on wires I won't be able to use.

That is just a generic aftermarket display. It won't work unless your transmission was already equipped with a gear position sensor for it to plug into. There is no bolt-on option for a bike as old as yours but you could probably retrofit a sensor like this:

With some effort. Probably more effort than it's worth. With experience you will instinctively know what gear you're in at all times, either by counting, or by comparing mph to rpm, or just by feel. some of the custom dash you can get have gear position as they have rpm and road speed inputs and they infer the gear from the relationship. my acewell offers it, but i couldn't be arsed setting it up nor do i need the info. i really don't understand the need to know what gear you're in. if it's wrong it should be obvious.

not sure about any stand alone gear position displays that use rpm and road speed inputs, but unless your bike has a specific position output as part of the gearbox, the inferred method is the only way.
