anybody got gloves they would recommend? the last two pair i've had have given up early in my book. my hands are healthy, so i'm not really complaining...just wondering if anyone's got an opinion. i had a pair of Olympia's and a pair of JoeRocket's.

I got three seasons of flattrack racing, including some asphalt, out of a pair of Olympia "kevlar reinforced" gloves. I crashed those gloves more than they deserved, and they held up reeally well. If I could replace 'em for the same amount that I paid for 'em three years ago, I'd buy two pairs.

I got a set of new Tecknic this year...the one's with the stupid looking imitation chrome on the knuckles. They seem decent. Mary's has some Alpine Stars that hold up well. All I can suggest is go with an expensive pair with the most armour you can find....short of that stupid brand that look like something a Knight would wear.

In general I'm not a fan of Tecnic stuff, if you buy even the moderately priced stuff it seems to wear quickly....their top of the line stuff is good though. AlpineStar seems to have the best overall, price/performance stuff. It seems like with gloves the only way to get something decent is to pay lots of money. $150 usually gets a good pair.

I have no doubt they are worth the money, during my crash at Frontier I felt my hand go right in the front wheel somewhere...went numb at the time..thought for sure it was fucked up pretty bad..came out just sore. Head, hands and feet... well you just gotta spend the extra money to protect them, if they get screwed up they are never the same. And you may have noticed how very many racers have messed up hands.

Olympia's are pretty good. When looking at gloves, pick any brand but looks for a few things in the design:
1) double layers of leather in key impact areas (palm of hand, outside of palm, up the side of the pinkie, knuckles).
2) look for good quality stitching with good thick thread. Double layers of stitching are good
3) I have mixed feelings about the metal sliders on the palm. They've worked nicely for most of my crashes except where they've ripped out and put a hole in the palm. They also scratch the paint on your bikes when you rest your hands on them.
4) Blah blah blah...

I have a set of Helds. Expensive, haven't tested them yet. Don't know if I'd buy them again over a set of Olympia's.

Rob - i've heard the Helds are really good. one of my friends from LRRS uses them...his best time is a 1:13.2 i think, and he trusts them so i guess that's good for something.

John - i read some all-leather glove's promo one time that said, 'we don't use carbon/kevlar that just shatters when you fall', and all i could think was, "well at least my knuckles aren't shattering". but i don't really know the truth. you feel like you've gotten away from some bad falls with healthier hands that you should have? how many times have you crashed with them?

zach,

i wear alpine stars gp plus. bought them three years ago, race in them and wear them on the street too. leather and stiching has held up where some of my friends can't say the same for their held gloves. also that carbon fiber stuff over the knuckles really does work. tested it this year in t5 at summit. hands were so nice and soft i masturbated as soon as i got back to the pits, and yes it was quite soft on my weenie.

p.s.- jb you soooo funny!

Mary's got the GP Plus too. And the plastic on the knuckles worked for her too.

Tex...is there a particular type of lotion you prefer?

Sometimes I just squirt some grease out of the grease gun and use that. Specially when someone brings a nice bike in the shop and I feel the need to spooge on it.

Zach,

>you feel like you've gotten away from some bad falls with healthier hands that you should have?<

Never had an issue with the hand hitting the pavement that hard(I guess) to know.

>how many times have you crashed with them?<

4 times

1. Between turn 4 and 5 by the flag poles. Got hit by Butch Baer on his Indian. Tumbled for an 1/2 hour and slid to the entrance to T6.

2. Broke connecting rod on the Ducati at Stafford and the engine locked up. Went down right in front of Turk.

3. Lost the front going into 6 trying to sneak up on Nichols in the 350gp race. Last lap, I was in 2nd and he didn't know I was there and I just pushed to hard. Oh yea, it was raining real hard.

4. Got punted out of T11 and landed pretty much on the grass.

helds are supposed to be the balls. t-bull has em. chris, and i know frank smith uses em. nice and soft for that work in the pits. way too expensive for me though. alpine stars is the way i think. the carbon kevlar thing works. steve d has a pair that he actually collapsed the carbon on. like it dented and kinked on somthing. i've also seen it burn through. but the dent i think would have really hurt if it had been just leather. so the armor is probably good.

joe c.,

i'm pretty sure i heard chris m. complaining about his "new" held gloves. of course that was a couple of years ago. tom t. (except for the last summit round) doesn't really crash. i think that is when and only when you know if you have a good pair of gloves, when you test pavement.

johnny b., no lotion for me, i like the friction. you know i'm touching myself right now!

see ya,

yeah, what you dont know is tom has a habit of doing pavement evaluations on the street regularly. and no, he hasnt crashed in a while on the track, but his leathers actually tore from him stretching them, and he burned a hole in them there. i think toms pretty happy with them. chris has told me he likes his gloves. i think theyre made from kangaroo, which is nice.

i think that's what the MotoGP guys get their leathers made of. it's not as thick as cow hide, lighter, and more resistant to tears too i think. plus, we all know how much motorcycle racers hate kangaroos...fuckers. i wanna be a moto gp rider so i have a free ticket to hate kangaroos....fuckers.
