As motorcycle sales fall, helmet buyers, at least, are more satisfied than ever with their purchases, according to the 2010 J.D. Power and Associates helmet satisfaction study. The findings are significant for an industry that is placing more emphasis on accessories since fewer customers are buying new bikes.

Overall, helmet satisfaction was the highest it has been in the 12 years the survey has been conducted, with Arai, Shoei, Icon and Harley-Davidson receiving the top rankings. HJC, Nolan and Fulmer ranked lowest. Average satisfaction was up 18 points from last year, to 784 on a scale of 900.

The survey measured customer satisfaction in 11 attributes, including ventilation, face-shield performance, weight, quietness, fit and comfort. It was based on responses from 4,800 buyers of new 2009 motorcycles who commented on their most recent helmet purchases.

Brand loyalty was directly correlated with owner satisfaction, the study found; 41 percent of highly satisfied helmet owners said they would buy another helmet of the same brand. Satisfaction levels also rose along with prices.

Sorry to see HJC are ranked lowest. I have a new HJC and I find it very comfortable and quiet. Had I been asked I'd have ranked it very high.

I bought an HJC about 10 years ago and found it very comfortable and the padding didn't seem to "settle" over the years. I was very happy with it. The SCTA required a Snell 2005 or better rated for this years racing. Malcolm Smith's Motorsports shop is about a mile away from me. Each year they have a blowout sale. I spooted a new HJC Snell 2005 helmet for $60 (I know. $60 head, $60 helmet). It had hideous "goth" sort of graphics. I thought its only for racing so screw it I can live with it. Found out I couldn't so I slapped a rattlecan quckie on it.
