Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and I have a couple questions.

First off, I noticed that there were a lot of pictures of CR's from Daytona (2005). I just recently moved here and am looking for a company or enthusiast to talk to with regards to converting my bike to the CR-style. I've searched the net looking for homepages, but have found very little.

I have a 2006 Kawasaki 250 (before you snicker, I was on a budget and didn't have many other options). I don't have the space/tools required to do all the work, but I would still like to convert it.

If anyone has any ideas, or know of any companies/individuals who could send me some info, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I appreciate the effort....but....the setup for this bike isn't quite what I had in mind...all they offer is fiberglass/plastic cover for my seat to make it look cafe/solo. I'm looking for an actual conversion, where i can drop the current seat and a lot of extra weight on the bike.

I'm assuming that i need to find someone in my area (Daytona Beach) who can do som custom work...

plz let me know if you if you have any other ideas or know anyone who can help me out.

I'm assuming the 2006 250 you bought is a ninja 250R, right? Unless you are financing it or got a really screaming deal on it. I don't understand how this was in your budget and a $1000 or less 1970's jap bike was out.

First off, is it really worth it to modify a ninja 250? I personally thing that the bike already does everything well mechanically, and aside from some suspension tuning to adjust for your weight and riding style I really wouldn't fuck with it.

This leaves bodywork - personally this is the really hard part if you want to make your bike look old. Making your new bike look like an old style race bike is more difficult than making an old bike look newer. I don't think a 2006 ninja 250 can ever really be a cafe racer in look, because the bike is so new any mods would likely make it a streetfighter. In this department the solo style seat, and ditching all the front fairings for a set of dual chrome headlights will get you far with this bike. Go to your local magazine shop and find a copy of streetfighter magazine or super streetbike, this will give you some idea.

Custom fab - are you serious? Any kind of custom fab work will cost you a fortune. You used the word budget in your post, any kind of budget restriction you have will be blown by the first part you have made for you custom (if you can make stuff this is a different story). It would be cheaper to buy an old jap bike that has parts already made for it than have anything custom made on your bike. A SOHC cb750 is always a good choice as there is a ton of thing for them now and the later models have not gone through the roof pricewise (although they are getting there).

I'm not saying what you want to do can't be done, with a lot of work and more money than it is worth doing it can. From my standpoint it just isn't worth it (others may feel differently). Cruse craigslist in your area, go to local bike nights, and talk to bike shops. What you want is either a cb350twin honda or a cb750 (suzuki GS750/1000 and kz900 are also good alternatives).

Ok...so my terminology was not correct...I appologize...but that's why I said "help the rookie." A street fighter look would be fine. Long story short, I'm looking for a way to make the bike into a solo-seat w/out using the fiber glass "cover" pieces that give the appearance of a solo seat.

Any suggestions?

According to most sources out there, there is no bolt on new seat that can replace the existing seat on the ex250. BTW, all sources suggest redoing the suspension to suit your weight and riding style.

From a custom standpoint, having seen very little of the ex250 frame without plastics, I would think a ssafe bet would be to buy something like the airtech tail and then have a shop fiberglass in a solo seat pan. You will have to add understructure and mounts to mount it to the bike but off the top of my head that seems like it would work. Unfrotunatly, thinking about the number of hours that would go into something like that I could see it costing a couple of hundred dollars before paint and seat fabric.

Take all the stuff off the bike and take some measurements of the bare frame. Then go out and look for bikes with one piece tails and measure them. You are looking for one that fits your frame dimensionall although custom mounts and a seat pan will have to be made.

Without your own work space it will be really hard to do this cheaply. I can see you easily speinding $500-$700 before you have your own seat.

anyway here are some links to help you et going:

post some pics of the rear end with all the plastic stripped off and maybe we can help with some solutions.

BTW - do you fly commercial or just private?

Geeto67, Thank you for the reply. It's greatly appreciated. I actually belong to the EX250 club (haven't been there in a while...I've asked too many stupid questions--as i've probably done here--and I backed out quietly.

I'm going to start looking for a fiberglass shop and ask them about some solutions that may not hit my wallet too hard. I like the gentleman's bike (I've been to his page actually, but his name has slipped my mind) in the last pic, but he's done some serious work to that bike i.e. rear suspension, framework, etc. etc.

Oh, and I don't fly commercially...yet. I'm working on my multi-commercial...So I'll have about a year worth of working as an instructor (CFI, CFII, MEI)to get my multi-hours up. I'm in grad school for the next two years anyway...so i'm not in any particular hurry. The plan is to go regional then international...time will tell though.

BTW...I'm working on rear suspension upgrades, and i've upgraded the internals for the front suspension already.

The only stupid questions are the ones not asked. I hate to see newbies be so timid aboutasking questions and thinking they are bothering people. Motorcycling is a self perpetuating hobby...if you don't ask a lot (tons...I mean a lot) of stupid questions you don't really learn anything. you can ask anything here, even if branson wears women's underwear.

This is my one caveat...this is a fairly loose board. Most of us here know each other in real life so we all give each other a lot of shit. Sometimes this happens to spill over to the people we don't know in real life...it is all in good fun and not meant to be taken personally.

If you don't get an answer here right away it isn't because we're ignoring you. Most of the others are racers and have busy schedules, and not everybody knows everything about every bike (except joe c and branson, they know it all).

That being said, since you are in daytona there must be a ton of boat builders down there, and boat builders are masters of fiberglass (just ask monkey here on the board). talk to people in the industry, maybe you can get one to make you a seat as a side job thereby saving you money.

As for the flying thing, I grew up in aviation (my old man's a pilot) although I never followed through on it. I will somedy though.
