how much slack do you remember there being in the cam chain on the xr when you did it??? we seem to have tons of slack in ours. enough that the tensioner doesnt do anything. was it pretty tight when you put the cam sprocket on??? our sprocket looks great, like no wear, but we cant get the cam dialed in even close and can even skip teeth if we try. so we think the chain is toast. if its supposed to be tight, we'll get another one. if its loose, maybe we'll look at the tensioner a little closer. since we didnt have ne to take apart, were not sure what its supposed to look like. this motor was a basket case.

Most likely the chain wasn't adjusted poroperly so its stretched to shit. But it has 2 adjusters... one on the cylinder and one on the head. If Chris removed the head, he probably noticed that where the tensioner is attached at the head the bolt/slug it connects to is not round (oblong) can be adjusted in addition to the cylinder adjuster.

i think weve narrowed it down to the chain being stretched at his point. we talked to another guy who does some hotrod 100 stuff and he said they stretch tons. the kid probably didnt adjust it and roached the valves. chris is just ordering a new chain and tensioner i think and were just going to split the cases and do it. for being such a simple little engine, shit sure gets beat up. thats why i hate dirtbikes sometimes.

we figured out the adjuster situation, that wasnt a problem. since we got this thing in parts, we werent sure exactly what was supposed to be happening when we put it back together.

ive been told we dont have to split the cases to pull the chain. we can pull it from behind the flywheel? true? man, that would save us alot of time. the clymer is very misleading in that aspect.
