so, my suit finally exploded from squeezing my fat ass into it this weekend. (anyone notice my duct tape accent stripe and jacket flapping in the breeze while i was racing?) anyway, ive been thinking a while about the revit stuff. you know, to keep things in the group. but i have loved my vanson stuff and am kind of afraid to go change. enough so that id do it again no questions asked basicly. just asking opinions here, is it worth it to go with the revit stuff ya think? in the long run? im sure the revit gear is up to it. but i know the vanson stff lasts and lasts. the vanson rep hasnt been at the banquet ina few years and ive been wanting to order a new suit at that point since they give such good deals on them. so what would you do? im pretty much sold on the vanson stuff. i just dont want to pass up a good suit for a better price. aron?

I'm kind of torn between Vanson and some of the more modern stuff. Vanson leathers are very tough...but also heavy and kind of cumbersome. I've had my custom set for about 8 years now. No signs of anything coming apart yet. But sometimes I regret the weight and the thickness of leather in places it really doesn't need to be that thick. I haven't checked out a new Vanson suit in a while, but mine is kind of old school, lots of leather instead of some of the more modern high tech materials.
Sometimes I get the feeling that Vansons are made to like protect you in a chainsaw fight, not just bike racing.

Vanson stuff is tough in a 'clothing for the apocalypse' sort of way, my leather jacket is a hand-me-down from my father and still going.

BUT, TT's Rev-IT suit did not have one seam torn or even an abrasion through the leather. And that was quite a get-off by the looks of his bike. AND thats not the only time he's used it like that. I really looked it over after the crash and it was all there. pretty dern tough.

I know Aron has crashed in his a few times too, they don't look too beat up either.

i hear you. i haven't rode in a revit suit, however they have tremendous exposure (especially with the usgpru 125 and 250 series). it seems that their suits hold up, or those dudes wouldn't keep buying and singing the praises, no matter what sponsorship of the series meant. i have examined the suits and they look to be a superior product. you should compare the stitching to the vanson, the lightweight materials to the vanson, and then the price. you might ask some people on this board first hand about what they think. z man ran z leathers for years, loved them, then went to revit. i know he has had some get offs, what's his feedback. tt and aron can testify. who else? quality definately must come first, then worry about price.

While I feel a little weird commenting on it as I obviously have a vested interest, I'm not a bullshitter. Vansons are great for what they are and they last, but knowing that it took me three years to break in my first Vanson jacket makes me think it's a little overboard for a one piece. My RS1 was light and supple right out of the box and has held up through two lowsides (tt has done the most thorough testing - I examined his suit after the Summit crash and it still looks good. No tears in the seams or leather, and that's the 5th). I can get really into detail about construction and materials if you want me to...but the weight and comfort and breathability are what makes it the best suit I have ever worn.

I don't know how much Vanson suits go for, so I can't comment on price really. We and most of our dealers give racer discounts. Email me at [email protected] if you wanna talk more about it.

I like Vanson leathers. I have a one piece I picked up off a seconds rack down at a Vanson sale for $500. Yes, they are heavy. Yes, the leather is very thick.

But those are good things for club racers. Think about what you're protecting. You want a suit that will last more than 10 crashes. You want a suit that'll let you lowside at 80mph in T1 and just slide it out with no problems. You want a company that, if you bring them the suit, they'll repair any stitching for free. I've crashed maybe 10-12 times in mine, at it still looks pretty damn good. Not even close to wearing through anywhere.

THICK is good for club racing. If you're worried about dropping a pound, don't do it in your protective gear. That's just stupid.

As far as RevIT stuff goes... All I own is a pair of revIt gloves. Sure, they're nice, but nothing to write home about.

BTW, I also think Held gloves suck dead donkey dick. Their seams rip if you look at them wrong.

im not worried about $$ when it comes to the suit. id rather spend the cash, be safe, and know itll last. getting a good deal is obviously up there on the list, but if the revits are say 30% less than the vanson, but only have a 70% lifespan, to me, its a wash. id rather spend the extra cash and know ill have it for 10 years before its beat. my vanson suit was about jbs price with the liner, sliders and all the armor. and i got a good deal on the jacket. a sweet deal. im sure theyre closer to 2k now with all that stuff. the top of the line a-star is 1500 retail. and thats off the rack. you know, i guess what it comes down to is that i started with probably the best you can buy, and im worried about moving on to something else. but id like to try something different, i just dont want to waste the cashola. aron, ill drop you a note.

I don't think Vanson is the end-all be-all, but you know. It's pretty much subjective...all about what you want and what feels best, mentally and physically. I'm kinda curious to know what changed in their gear in the last few years. It seems like the leather is different than the Vanson I got in 1999...

They are. And I'm not saying they're the best out there. But my god have I beaten on mine and it'd held up very well. Check out the Rev-it suits very carefully is all I'm saying. Not only the leather in the crash&burn areas, but the stitching is nice thick thread and the armor inside is substantial. If it is, and cheaper, go for it by all means.

Are Vansons still made in the USA? I'm not sure, but I think they are.

Very well said Aron. I have "speedmode" leathers from the 80's. i think they were made by some italian suit maker. i really like them but i have grown out of them <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>. they held up very good with the 1/2 dozen times i tested the protection!! I'm using some hand me down dainese suit and it just is to big for me.

anyway, Rev-It rocks for me. let's see:

-two consecutive low sides in the rain last spring; T1 and Carousel @ Summit.
-high speed lowside; T2 @ NHIS
-high side in the oily wet; T2 @ NHIS
-weird, on the brakes, i think we touched tires, tumbling routine; Carousel @ Summit.

these Rev-It leathers have been professionally evaluated and deemed fit to keep racing...as are the gloves that have been thorough just as much. so until they remove T2 at NHIS and the Carousel at Summit, i'll be sprortin' the Rev-IT leathers. also, we all talk about supporting fellow racers...well, in the states Rev-It is run by our fellow vintage racers. i've also seen a few leather repair professionals list Rev-It in their top two or three for construction. oh, and the perforated suits are amazing on a hot raceday.
