I got this press release today and unfortunately read it after dinner. Now I have to go cook myself a new meal. I can just see this whole pitch going down in the ol' HD japanese HQ " we can reach a whole new demographic...":

COME JOIN US FOR ANOTHER SPECTACULAR EVENT AT THE ETNIES SHOWROOM AS
WE CELEBRATE WITH:

EMERICA / HARLEY DAVIDSON LAUNCH PARTY

THURS. MAY 3rd
29 GREENE ST. BET. GRAND N CANAL
7PM-11PM

Featuring:
the New Nighster Motorcycle
Photography by Ed Templeton

Music by DJ Smoke L.E.S

Sponsored by: Harley Davidson, Emerica, Vice, Budweiser, Dewars

The feeling you get from a Harley(r) is hard to explain. It reaches
deep down in your soul and alters your take on certain things. You
become part of something bigger (I¡Ý(B a brotherhood and sisterhood
whose
approach to life can't be fenced in.

Skateboarders are like the people who ride our bikes. Unbreakable is
in the blood. A never-say-quit attitude is in the creed. And this
summer, bikes and boards come together when a number of the world's
best skaters grab some iron and rumbled across America's Heartland for
Team Emerica's Wild Ride (I¡Ý(B the fully interactive professional
skateboarding tour on Harley-Davidson(r) motorcycles.

Drink the free beer and piss on the walls......

If anybody really wants to bust this up like a highschool kegger I am totally in. I think I have a honda with straight pipes that will do just the trick.

the nightster is supposed to be a hooligan bike anyway...launch party?!?! skateboards?!?! what was HD thinking.

And to think I used to own a few Tempelton boards back in the day.
I am a HD fan , but the "nighster" is a poor exhausr for a hardcore bike...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, i have a friend who is a sponsored skateboarder and he likes harleys too.... maybe it's time for him to get sponsored by emerica!
but what i thought was that he was sort of like a rare breed kind of dude cause he wears tight jeans and he's conservative. plus, when i was out skating around it was sort of "fuck the corporations" type of shit.... i guess it really changed in 10 years.

fucking shit, can i join in with the 650 and a fat chain?

lol a lowered sporty with some blacked out trim. i recently got an 01 sportster 1200c. all i would have to do is get the rustoleum satin black and lower the thing and i'd have a nightster too. harley used to do a great bike for a decent price but theyve just gone insane.

some people are like slinkies, basically useless but they still make me smile when i push them down the stairs

Thats because for the most part Harley owners dont demand much.
Other than the bike is American made. But even that is a diluted dream these days. They are buying a image more than a motorcycle. You notice the " 5 " on the case on the Nightster

you know what that means ?.
Big news in the Harley Camp a 5 speed.

I don't get it, there hasn't been a 4 speed in harley's lineup since the 70's so how is a 5 speed big news? whoever told you that was pulling your leg lance (unless you were trying to be jackass)

The 5 actually stands for the 50th anneversary of the sportster.

YOu want to slam HD on the new sportster? how about this is the first year for EFI...the japs only had it...what....10 years ago? Or how about the new Twin cam overheating fix? shutting down one cylinder while idling in traffic. Brilliant (not!). Or how about previous EFI on HDs where they were too cheap to spring for O2 sensors?

if you are going to take a cheap shot, at least make it an accurate cheap shot. It isn't like it is hard.

Geeto,

I think Lance is right on the "5". My 94 sporty has the same 5 incorporated into the tank graphic, and I beleive it is on the same place on the motor.

Seems like Harley is trying to broaden their market by going to the skateboard crowd, who I think would be more geared to sport bikes.

I looked it up and didn't see how the tank graphic has it for that year but you are right I did notice the 5 on other covers. The sportster got a factory 5 speed in 1991 (which is a shame in and of itself since the big twins got them as soon as harley bought back itself from AMF), prior to that the 5 speed was a (pricey) dealer installed aftermarket kit. Now the dealers install 6 speeds into the 5 speed cases. The sporty is the shit bike in the HD lineup, often overlooked and hardley ever updated. The sporty didn't even get an evo style engine until 1986. I think they only got rubber mounting a couple of years ago also. It was the dealer who told me about the 5 standing for 50th anniversary so, so much for your dealer knowing his product, altough this year is the 50th anniversary. SO I was wrong about the 5 on the case but at 16 years it is hardley "big news". we all know harleys are antiquated...blah blah blah.....

Buell on the otherhand has always been investing in the same powerplant and was able to give their bikes Fuel Injection around the time same time the japanese were using FI on their bikes and HD was expirementing with it on the big twins.

HD makes more money off "wannabees" than all the gold chain and dub manufacturers put together. Sure there are motorcycle enthuasists who buy their stuff too but the large part of what they sell is an image, and who do you sell an image to? people who don't have one or want a new one. Now that the "x games" generation is starting to come into some money, why not find a way to get all those people who watched espn and never skated, bladed, ski but always wanted to, to fork over their dough-ray-mi for a "hardcore" image. It sucks, it pisses on the people that actually do something cool with their own thing, it is exploitive of what someone else built, but it will probably make them a ton of money and it is not hard to find someone with talent to shill for a big corporation (espically when sponsership is the difference between doing what you love and flipping burgers).

The fucking thing is tonight, if anybody wants to really give them shit over this then I'm in.

what the fuck??!!

I used to skate. When I skated ( a long time ago of course) we were pissed off punks, hated the world and corporate North America.

When the fuck did it become this hip-hop, fashion conscious corporate whore that it is now?

teaming up with Harley?

Holy shit, that's about as bad as it gets... Willy G. and his bullshit "Harley Brotherhood" sales pitch is getting old and long in tthe tooth. Nothing was funnier than seeing 15 identically dressed rebel "bikers" in doo-rags, chaps and fringe-covered leather jackets all riding brand new shiny low-mileage bikes... still isn't much funnier actually.

the very last 5 speed in a facotry harley was the 1989 (i think) sportster. i know the first few years of the evolution sportster was a 4 speed.
