I used to use it when I painted model cars. It's pretty good for the stuff tape can't bend around but it is way more time consuming than tape.

The best stuff is 3M plastic flexible stripe masking tape. Available at better auto body supply houses everywhere this is the stuff the pros use to do complex stuff like flames. Basically you lay out your edge with it and then fill with blue painters tape. It will really step up your game.

Being the cheap ass that I am, I've contemplated melting wax for this application. Not only is it cheaper, it also sets a nice mood in the shed.

have the 3m in 2 diff widths.. and the blue and green painter's tape in various widths
was going to use this as you say on the tight curves..
have also seen using playing cards and a hole puncher for tight curves..

this stuff is almost elmers glue in consistancy , then peals off to release.. its got a slight blue/white color when applyed.. candle wax would prob work , but a mistake would have to be totaly stripped to get the wax off so paint would stick..
personaly I thought that dap weather strip glue I have already would be a close thing to use ,yet got this as its been proven in r/c to work so well...

Wax is a terrible masking agent because it leaves behind a greasy residue. I am not a fan of solvent cleaners on top of basecoats before the clear is applied.

That makes sense. I was going to use it on the vin numbers. paint the area black, wax and gently sand to where it is level with the base metal, then paint another color, remove wax. not really a pretty kind of function. That way when the DMV bastards look at my vin they will be able to see it real nice.

A painter I used to work with did an amazing job painting the honeycomb wheels he had on his Formula 400. When I asked him how many hours he spent masking, he told me it was a quick job. He claimed he used vaseline to keep the paint from sticking to the parts of the wheels he didn't want to paint.

Don't know if he was BS'ing me or not but the wheels sure looked good.

I use this stuff to seal up 100+ old windows for the winter and peel it off in the spring. It dose not lift the paint onthe windows BUT not sure what it would do to real paint. It does STINK badly i normaly seal all but one window (the unsealed stays open all day) to vent then a few days later i'll seal the one.

I think It would work great for things like wheels above.

He probably wasn't, you don't clear coat over the metal parts on those wheels so he doesn't have to worry about residue.

The way I always did embossed fill was to paint the stamped area black and then while the paint was still wet use a rag with a little lacquer thinner on it to lightly go over the top and remove the paint from the raised portions. Works well but you may have to practice to get the pressure right. Too little nothing comes off too hard and it all comes off.

wheels taped, masked, playing card covered and painted... now drying...have waited for a prime day to paint outside as this is PJ1 single mix epoxie satin ..went on smoothly coloring (black) the frost finish of the surface,showing well against the polished aluminum..
some have frowned on its use but I have found (thru my own trial and error) its non hardening issue stem's from not pe-mixing the pre warmed product well in the can, laying on too heavy of a coat and not chosing an ideal day to paint....

there are now Dunlop gold seal k70 tire's and new tubes on... some will say nay to their us on this, but they are period correct in design and size, as close to the original Magmopus as I could find..
