Hello all,
been lurking and reading on and off for a couple years. Finally made the plunge and am starting my first build.
I have been riding for long time (dirt, mx, road race, super moto) but have not owned a street bike for several years - I think I miss it.
I have done most of my own mant over the years, including top end rebuilds on a couple of single cylinders. but no real machining experience.

So, I picked up a mostly running '84 gpz 550 that is crazy ugly to start. I paid $300 and a case of bacon for it!

I used muratic acid to clean all the rust out of the tank and acetone to dissolve the TERRIBLE tank coat job someone did. I still need to do another cleaning and re-coat, but was anxious to get it running.

After some clean up and an inline fuel filter (the stock petcock screen is shot) I got it running and took a very short ride. I still need a new front master since the stock is seized. Pretty sure I need to open up the carbs and clean them as well.

Here is how it looks now.

as far as plans....
I guess I will be going 'cafe-ish' . Clip-ons and round headlight. plan on a full engine pull and paint the frame and motor of the winter. Still undecided on the seat (but I want a passenger seat) or the center (battery, CDI, fuses) area.

I welcome input and mocking, just hoping for some help as I run into questions.

Thanks,
Lee

Hey Lee,
That's a nice style GPz, shame to ruin it. I'd spend my money on the things that matter...tires, suspension, brakes etc. Redo the seat and it could look like this... 001.jpg

Bought a new GPZ550 in 1989, so if I were you would just do a bit of a restoration on it.
IMHO it's a pretty little bike, as is. You've even got the original exhaust, which is rare (at least over here).
Perhaps loose the after market fairing lowers though.

Welcome to the fray!!!

If you can get through the shit shows this place is an excellent source of info, help, and a metric shit ton of opinion!!

Hope the build goes well and keep the pics and updates coming.

I certainly understand people not wanting me to 'mess' with the bike.
I think no matter what bike you find a lot of people will feel that way.

on the plus side, priority #1 is to clean it up, get it running and operating as new (or close)
However, that lower fairing (which is stock) is NEVER going back on!

Should I move this to the Build thread as I continue?

-Thanks,
Lee

If you're gonna go through with it then yes, start a build thread.

It can often serve as a handy reference when looking back over parts of the build and you get to laugh at your own unrealistic time frames (like me)

Also it provides info/inspiration for others looking to do the same.

what you should have done was posted the "before" pic with the front fairing removed and told us you bought it that way. then no one would be harassing you about the resto idea.

probably don't need to say it, but keep the original bits.
