After starting my project many months ago, I have recently started questioning my abilities and vision. My discovery of this site has boosted my spirits and renewed my determination to see this to the end. You all have some talent and imagination! I don't know why I didn't find this site earlier? This is a '79 CB750 I picked up last summer. Progress is slow but is going to be a rolling chassis soon. I had to modify the frame to accept the universal seat fairing. I still have a bunch of polishing to do on the case covers. I built the front wheel out of three, learning to lace the hard way. I lowered the forks and polished the lowers. I may have made a mistake with the candy powder coated frame. Since I can't do anything about it now, I'm trying to figure out what color to paint the tank and seat cowl. I was thinking to match the frame and paint a smoke gray teardrop on the tank and smoke gray number plates on the seat cowl. Opinions? Also, the LED lights I was to mount didn't quite work out, so I'll have to cover up my time consuming mistake, unless that is, someone has some input as to what I can do? I didn't want to mount a round tail light on the surface of the tail. I think everyone tends to do that sort of thing. Anyway, I hope to be riding it this spring.[8D]

You could always go with silver. Silver looks great with a red frame. High metalic but not boatflake or anything like that. Just a thought.

The lights are a string of LEDs in a flexible silicone strip. I didn't figure on the spacing for the holes once the strip is bent around the fairing (see roman helmet crease). I fucked that up for sure. The tank is not my favorite, but since I don't have the budget for a cool custom tank like a Benjies, I'm stuck with this bulbous thing. Anyway, I would like to minimize the size of it by painting a teardrop on the side. With a silver tank, would you builders paint a black (or what other color) teardrop? Would it be gloss like the tank, or flat/matte?

The red frame looks trick - for the rest of the bike I'd look into a multi color of red, white and blue for the tank and seat. That would work into with the red frame. The engine fins I'd paint black with VHT type of paint and polish the remaining alu parts. I've been looking at that same color comb for on of my builds for the last year.

If you can keep the center section of the bike clean with no electrics showing where you can see through the bike - that would also be nice. One advantage of using the DOHC motor is it is a wet sump engine with no external oil take needed.

Too many folks think the only color to paint with is flat, gloss black on a cafe.

I think that tank has lots of potential. Look at using the paint scheme that Honda used on the CBX in 79 -81. It has a darker center section with lighter outer panels. The other thing is to blend the seat with the tank where the tank has the tabs that come down on the sides in the rear. Can you do fiberglass work? This might be the place to try. I would glass some extensions onto the front of the seat that would actually plug into the grommets on the tank, like the stock side covers did. In my personal opinion, I think the seat would look better in the rear if it was moved back about 2 inches. If you were going to do some glass work at the front anyway, you could then fill and blend that gap right nto the rear of the tank.

I'd probably leave the seat right where it is, not sure though.

But I was going to type something about blending the tank rear to the seat base front with some glass

and then read that you already went there

could be done with much taste and be something uncommon

I'd toss the stock side covers back on it cause they flow with the tank instead of making it stop abruptly like it does with them off. The frame looks cool though. I like that color too.

I finally got to do some work on the CB. I mocked up the carbs, headlight, front wheel, fender, and tach. Even though I shortened the forks by 2", the front end is still way too high and I had to further drop the forks through the triple tree. I won't have much fork travel with this set up, maybe 4" or so... Bummer

How did you shorten your forks? That may not be enough travel on the front end unless you have mega stiff springs. You may want to put them down a bit and see how it sits with your weight on it. You should not need to drop the front end that far with stock forks. It may be a little on the twitchy side, too.
