There are several Mainers here, so here are a few questions...

I just picked up a little Honda from Parks I want to possibly fix up for my daughter, who lives in Portland Maine, to use to get around the downtown area. The bike is an old Honda 50 stepthru, either 50 or 49cc.

Can anyone tell me the rules for Maine-

Do you need a special license to operate a 50cc bike or does a regular car license do?

Do 50cc bikes need to be licensed?

Do you need liability insurance?

How hard is it to register a bike with only a handwritten bill of sale (bike is probably a 63-66)?

I would prefer she takes a motorcycle riders course--anyone have a link for one in or near Portland?

Thank you.

Driver - Car license is fine up to 50cc
Bike - I believe registration IS required
Insurance - Don't know that one (Wikipedia says Liability is required)
Registration - No title required at that bike's age. A bill of sale is fine.
The MRSC is really hard to get into in Maine, and usually fills up the week they open registrations in spring. There are one-day classroom sessions for permits given at the driving schools. I've forgotten the name of the place I took mine (Greater Portland Driving?), but www.mullensdrivingschool.com lists "MC courses available". (In Maine you are required to take at least the 8-hour class to get a new motorcycle endorsement.)

Hope this helps.
