i had someone give me a cb500t today, all it is is a rolling chassis with most of the motor
has anyone ever did anything with em, is it worth messing with or should i use it as a coffee table base?

Thats pretty funny...really it is.That bid for the front end.

If you have most of the bike, its a twin which I like,as a cafe bike (for the style of it) I think they are worth it.Motorcycle reveiwers ,back in the day ,didnt like it over the 450.But these mid seventies bikes are getting harder to find dailey,That is localy seems there always is a nice one for sale on ebay somewhere in the middle of the us where shipping costs get in the way of a good deal. .I know they made lots of these old bikes but they are diminishing as they get older and lose their titles people just part them out so whole ones are getting harder to find.
And most people that have in the past had these old bikes come thru there hands readily will start to see less and less.
You have to feel it with any bike if you see it as it is and can picture it up and running and looking the way you want ,Id say its worth it...but if your not feeling it for the bike.....You have already got the front end sold....

I thought the 500 had coil springs instead of torsion bars. Too lazy to look it up though...

I took my 450 engine apart, partly out of curiosity to see how the head worked, and also because I'd never worked on anything but singles.
I satisfied my curiosity, and now it's taking a little more effort to put the whole thing back together again.

I guess it's a cool bike, heavier than I think it needs to be, by a lot. And since I've never actually ridden one I don't know what they're like. Correction, I raced one that was clapped out, had almost no torque compared to my 500 single, but I would hope that a reasonably fresh motor would get out of it's own way.

What are you gonna do with it?

well the bike is nowhere even close to complete. the motor is mostly there but locked up solid, thats no big deal as i do all of my own motor work. the roller is complete however. dont know if i'll cafe it or build a rigid chopper out of it. i love both styles of bike. i just need to find someone that can build a hardtail section for me, i'm nowhere near good enough with a bender and welder to do it myself.unless someone here might want it. i'm in no big rush to do anything with the bike as i've decided to do some stuff to my cb750 like reinstall the rask rearsets with brackets that will put the things where i can actually use em.

The motors in those 500 twins aren't worth dick. If you really want the chassis here is what you do: Find a wrecked newer triumph bonniville motor and jam it in that frame. Or better find a jap parallel twin that is not that 500T and jam it in the frame. I'd say put a sport bike 600 motor in there but the frame is too narrow.

To track down all the missing motor peices you will spend more than the bike is worth and only have a stock motor. might as well do something cool with it.

Does anybody here think it's a good idea to put this front end on a cb350? From what I've read, the disc brake sucks but the forks are nicely sprung & these bikes were supposed to handle quite well. Could I use my drum brake 350 front wheel? I hadn't really thought seriously about it; I was just being facetious. But now I am seriously considering it. Price is right. Opinions please.

Ok, Here is how I did it on my race bike, CB350, and why. I removed the stock front end completely. Replaced the bearings with tapered rollers cause I had it apart and the ball bearing races were rusted and dented. I cut all the junk off of the upper and lower triple clamps and then took an adjustable straight reamer and hand reamed out the triple clamps to 35mm. Then I painted the clamps and reinstalled everything on the front end. Now the spacing was still correct for my original drum brake front wheel and my original fender. I used XL350 forks, but still 35mm. All in all it was as close to a bolt up operation as possible. I didn't have to change out any steering stem or wory about offset and trail and such. Plus my instruments still fit in the original location and it looks almost stock. I am running in AHRMA superbike so I need to keep the original fender, headlight and instruments to be legal.

And the front end is a good one - they had cool damper forks very similar to a modern cartridge fork. Yes the mickey-mouse floating caliper link sucks, but you can use the drum front wheel with the right spacer and the disk hub axle. I say go for it.

Fuzzy, My 2 cents would be that anything you've seen done to a 450 could be done to a 500t, they are basically the same. (I said basically) If nothing else, sell the useful bits to 450 riders, a lot of the parts off the 500 are compatable with the 450 and considered an upgrade. Tranny gears, Cylinders, swingarm etc...

Plenty of info here: http://www.osg.se/sweb/cb450/index.asp

FR, it's a fun ride once you realize it has no balls till 7 grand.

I'm not sure what Geeto is cranking on about, my 500T is a fine bike. With a cam, a little port work, free floing tubes and some jetting it's quite a decent ride. Hell even stock it wasn't bad. I love how the 450 purists like to look down thier noses at 50 extra ccs and a better gearbox.

By spring I'll have mine down to 300 pounds give or take and around 60hp. While not current sport bike standard it'll be a fun little cafe bike that will look good too.

Lead, follow or get out of the way!
