I'm used to working on cars but I figured it would be nice to make a change for the winter. I picked up a 1980 suzuki gs 550. I'm figuring some of it out, but I definitely have some questions. Looking forward to contributing what I can and learning all I can!

Welcome! Most guys would tell you to get it running and drive it some before you mod it out and I believe that is sound advice. I've picked up several old "projects " that someone started and gave up on, for cheep, because they got in over their head. If you have a bike that runs and rides, you will get a feel for it and you can go to runs and meets and see what's actually going on, and meet people who might help you out, then you would have a better chance of having fun and not burning out?
